Steering position sensor

I've searched "steering angle", "steering angle sensor", "steering position" and "steering position sensor" and haven't found an appropriate thread.

I have a 2015 (pre facelift) model. I had the TCS light on the dash. I've re-calibrated with ForScan and have my fingers crossed. But I was wondering what the information from this sensor is used for? When the light has been on I've not noticed anything with how the vehicles handles. Is used for stability control, if so how does this show up while driving? Does it affect the amount of power assist to the steering depending on steering angle? Is it something else?

Your help will be warmly received.

Thank you
