overheating!

hey guys i need to get my truck figured out asap!
Ok first of all its a 01 3.0 supercab auto. Ok it only happens probably once every two weeks and with no warning.
I will be driving around at operating temp and then my heat will blow cold and the coolant temp will drop! Shortly after it will skyrocket up to overheating and blow the lid off the resevior and make a mess. About 30 seconds later the temp will come back down to normal and be fine.
WTF!?!!?
i just changed the thermostat, and that didnt help.
i need ideas! thanks!

$1100? Do it your self its not too hard. I did it in my corsica TWICE. The gasket never went completely bad but it was getting there so I changed it before I had a problem. Its not to hard its just alot of work and time. the gasket its self is fairly cheap.

Damn, that really sucks. Thats wierd that an 01' would be having those problems already.

Have you taken it to a shop yet?

Before you go pulling the heads....Go get a gas sniffer kit and test the coolant. It's more than likely a clogged radiator or Fan Clutch.

I'll do that George..see what happens. If it is the head..I found a mechanic that does work onthe side..his price is 300 labor..and parts. Won't the heads have to be sent to a machine shop for???? Any ideas on what they do, and the costs..

If you head is warped maybe idk. But to just do a gasket no the head does not need to goto a machine shop.
