the wire youre looking for *should* be tn/ye and you can find it in a couple different places, but i tapped into it in the engine compartment at the pcm

nope you dont have to buy an adapter... the tach signal wire i previously referred to gives the appropriate reading. take a look at the wire bundle coming out of the pcm in the back of the engine compartment. i'm pretty sure the tan/yellow wire is in that bundle. (thats where i tapped into it)

Yup. The PCM drives the factory tach and that tach signal also works on aftermarket tachs. I don't have a 2000 wiring manual yet but 1997 and 2001~2005 Rangers are all tan/yellow.

1999 2.5

I found several tan wires but none with a yellow stripe. Is there any other way to hook up the feed? What about using an induction clamp off a timing light?

Found this on the ranger station.

A - Its not hard at all. The powertrain plug is located under your hood on the passenger side of the engine compartment in the rear. It is a pretty big plug - about four inches long or so. In that cluster of wires is a yellow wire with a brown stripe. that is the one I hooked my tachometer up to in my 1999 Ranger with the 2.5
