Fuel gauge stuck on E.

I did a quick search but didn't have much luck.
I'm having an issue with our Ranger,it started a week or so ago.
After getting gas last week the fuel gauge went straight to E and will only move after the truck is shut off. Then it will slowly rise up to 1/4 tank regardless of how much fuel is in the tank.
As soon as the truck is keyed on it drops right back to E.

Just wondering if this is a common issue as my friends B2300 has the same problem?
Any advice on where to get started to fix this?

Sounds to me like a sensor issue. I am pretty sure it always shows a 1/4 tank when the truck is shut off. So most likely there is an issue with the sensor reading the gas in the tank.

My best guess was something in the sending unit also.
Any advice for checking the sending unit, remove the bed or drop the tank?

Its easier to remove the bed IMO.
To check the sending unit, Grab a buddy and a test light. Pull the connecting wire off the top of the sending unit, have your buddy turn the truck on. start testing wires until the gauge goes up to full. If you can find the wire where it makes the gauge go to full, you need a sending unit, if not, it could be the gauge or the wires.

Well, this is what happens why gas prices sky-rocket.

But yeah, I agree with a sensor.

sending unit. mine went out on my 97 but I knew at 300 miles it was time to find a gas station. I ran it like that for 3 years because you have to replace the fuel pump as well sence it is combined with the sending unit.
