Hello! Please refer to the photo for this question.
It's an '07 Ranger 2WD XLT Supercab.
Right in the center there is a screw on the outside edge of the tailgate, which holds the wire support.
I wanted to remove it, but when I unscrewed it, it would not come out. It unscrewed all the way until it was mostly free and "wobbly," but would not come free of the tailgate.
I didn't continue because I was afraid maybe there is something meant to hold it from the inside and that if I successfully forced out the screw, that thing would fall inside somewhere and I would not be able to reattach the screw. I screwed it back in and it held tightly as before.
Any idea what was going on there? How is that screw held in? How is it meant to be removed?
As stated, just machine screw. But if something does fall into the tail gate, You can get in by removing the access panel behind that black plastic cover.
It is a little more than just a machine screw. It is a shoulder screw that leaves a lose fit on the cable eyelet when tightened to allow it to swivel without binding. There may be a floating nut inside the tailgate that it threads into. The nut should not drop into the tailgate but if it does it is accessible as has already been stated.
