Hello everyone I'm a new member and new ranger owner, I have a 2004 XLT 4x4 and when I let off the throttle I get a thump similar to a bad motor or trans mount but these are brand new. What is the potential cause of my problem?

Welcome to the forum

Does it do it in 2WD and 4high?

Do you feel it in steering wheel or frame/body, or just hear it?

Does it do it when steering wheel is turned one way or the other?

No noise on hard acceleration?

Rear u-joints
Rear ring/pinion <<< but would also "whine"

Check torsion bars <<< should make noise when you accelerate and or brake as well

I notice it in 2wd especially straight and level or up hill, not sure about in 4 high. I don't hear it I feel it in the frame/body only when I let off the throttle never on acceleration. I do not hear a ring/pinion whine or vibes that would coincide with bad Ujoints. Seems to be coming from the rear

Its the Slip joint/slip yolk on rear drive shaft, 99% sure, just needs to be lubed

Read here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/drivet...-sticky-73528/

I would pull the drive shaft and do the u-joints since they are 15 years old but up to you

I would drop the rear of drive shaft to do slip joint relube

If you do take off rear of drive shaft be sure to mark it first so it goes back on the same way
