Using exsisting lighting power as relay trigger for another light souce.
Hey new guy in the house...Have a new to me Ranger 09 4L.
Im wanting to have a ditch light on the passenger side, I have located a spot for the mount and know thereabouts to route the wire to the engine compartment.
I have all necessary wire, fuse block, relays ect, But Im having a problem finding a spot to pass through the firewall.
The front fog light have been burnt out or otherwise not working, Im not too concerned. But I was wondering, as I am not too familiar with using relays at all in this manner.
I might eventually want to refit the fog light aswell... but right now I need the ditch light now more then the fog's.
Can I tap into the fog light line, and use that as the trigger power for the relay of the ditch light, as to avoid the troubling work to drill or otherwise find a hole to use to route an interior light switch, more importantly so as to use existing stock interior light selector switch to turn on the ditch light instead?
Does this make sense??

A bit of an update...
I ended up using the fog lamp power supply to instead with a relay setup, Just plumbed inline and used that power direct to the light.
In the position above, but routed the cord along the top and through the panel groove by the antenna, zapped a point to hold the wire on the base, then into the engine compartment.
I made a 4' jumper with automotive light fixture plugs and Loom covering. The same 9005 bulb male and female sockets with a pigtail from amazon.
I had no idea that thing existed... I'm so happy that it did/does. Now it makes sense to have replacements like this to fix your own.. but none the less, so cool.
For now, until I get new fog lamps to replace the burnt bulbs in the housings... I just run this setup.
Also I found out upon my search for these plug sockets.... a splitter pigtail to mount more than one light bulb to the supply power. Again later when I get new bulbs, I'll check the power rating with this or if I can find all new LED fog lamps, Ill get one and run these together...
Good times, now Ill be able to see a bit better at night... aswell as an easy setup to make in a couple of hours.
