Vehicle Computer
 
I am about to disconnect my battery cable to do a intake upgrade, instructions say to disconnect the cable. What should I expect when I reconnect the battery as far as how the truck will run and do I have to drive it to have it re-learn shift points etc.

It is an 2008 3.0.

Idle Adaptive Strategy:

After reconnecting the battery and starting the engine, immediately let it idle until it warms up to operating temperature. After it's warm, continue to let it idle in park w/ and w/o AC and in drive w/ and w/o AC. Leave it in each in each of the 4 modes for 2 or 3 minutes. This will give a fast learn on the IAC duty cycles.

If you bypass the above and drive it immediately after a reset, it will still learn the 4 IAC duty cycles but it will take longer. Until learning is complete, there may be dips and flares in the idle as the PCM changes between the 4 idle modes.

Shift Adaptive/Pressure Control Strategy:

Driving in different conditions will allow the transmission to relearn the shift timing and pressure settings over time. Until the learning is complete, the shifts may feel firmer or softer than they did before the reset.

Thanks everyone. It is far better than the Dakota I had. I disconnected the battery then changed the oil, reconnected the battery and the darn truck would not idle with out me holding the accelerator down a little. After about five minutes it then would idle and ran fine.

Interesting.. you had to disconnect the battery to change the oil? Was it one of the newer rigs with all of those special low oil sensors and such you can check online or something?

No I disconnected the battery to clear the code from the computer for tevap leak. The cap was a constant source of trouble until I found the right way to repair it. Drop it on the ground and replace on truck. In the first 2.5 years I put three gas caps on the truck. No it was never left loose or left off.
