Want to cut off cat. converter

I have a hole in my cat. converter. Will it hurt anything if I cut it off and run a straight pipe in its place. What exactly does the cat. converter do? I know it has to do with emissions.

your cat finish burning any unburnt fuel. yes you need it for emissions. you will get a check engine light if you just replace it with a piece of pipe

No it doesn't. yes its is emissions related and and yes there is ways of getting around emissions with no cat. A catalytic converter converts harmful gases that result from combustion and converts them to non harmful gases by storing and releasing Oxygen. As a result of combustion you have HC(fuel vapor), CO(you will die from this one), NOx(destroys ozone layer). It converts them into Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen and H2O. To get around just put your post cat oxygen sensor in a spark plug non-fouler. The only way you can get in trouble at emissions this way is if they look under your truck with a mirror which most places don't do anymore

anyway to do it without a CEL?

We have no inspections here. SC wanted the clunkers back on the road.

I have a 95 2.3 with no cat and I have no CEL on

you can always get dummy O2 sensors.. or figure out the resistance needed and put a resistor on the wires instead of the O2 sensor.

That is because you have an OBD1 based truck and therefor no secondary o2 sensor.

Can the inspection places tell if you turned off the downstream O2 sensor with a tune? Will the computer throw a CEL?

cory94ranger 11-16-2010 02:45 PM

I have a 94 with 2.3.. Are you getting any better mpg without the cat?

The tree hugger police are watching you!

you know, if it won't pass emissions like that, you can always hook an oxygen bottle to the air intak. this will make it burn cleaner just to pass the test and then you can get rid of the bottle. I've heard of this working before.
