'99 Ranger physically difficult to shift
A short time ago we picked up a very nice looking '99 automatic XLT sport Ranger, body great shape, clean, a perfect vehicle for my 88 yr old Dad. There was a problem with the shifter--I physically could not move the lever to the different "gears"....We took the vehicle to be repaired, they put some kind of new "cable" in it. The cable cost $105. The old cable moved very well when it was out of the truck. Now, we have delivered the truck to my Dad, and he said he is having a lot of trouble moving the shifter to the different gears. I got in it and tried it, it seems to be just as bad as it was before we got it fixed. It didn't take it long, only a matter of a couple days, to stop working. Does anybody have any ideas what might be causing this problem and what it will take to fix it? Dad loves the truck, but he needs to be able to shift it. Person we bought it from said he had recently had the transmission re-done. Thanks for anything anybody can come up with for a solution..............Pat

Chock the wheels so it cant roll.
Take a flat head screw driver and pop off the cable at the trans. You should be able to shift the trans by hand. If you can the problem is in the column. If not then its in the trans.
I would be pissed if they took my hundred bucks and didn't fix it.
