Wiring nightmare
Wiring nightmare
i have an 88 ranger with a 2.9 that was supposed to have been rebuilt 20,000 miles ago but doesn’t run. The wiring harness has been hacked to ribbons. I’d like to hear the vehicle run so I can decide if it’s worth fixing or if it’s just parts but I have no idea what all has to be wired to run. I know that the air idle sensor isn’t connected to anything. What is the bare minimum of sensors that have to be attached to hear the engine run?
Only thing you need is the distributor/TFI system and computer, both need to be powered up
The distributor/TFI is the spark system, it uses a sensor inside the distributor to time the coil for spark, that same timing signal is sent to the computer so it can time the fuel injectors and so it knows the engine RPMs so can adjust fuel flow accordingly
Both of these are powered up with Key on, by the EEC relay and its fuse, EEC relay is on inner fender in engine bay, it has a Brown base, it should "click" with key on.
You can test Coil "+" terminal for 12v with key on, and any one of the fuel injector wires should have 12v with key on
Relay near by the EEC relay is the Fuel Pump Relay, it has a Green base, it will also "click", but twice, on and then off 2 seconds later, it "clicks" back on after engine starts
Thats about it, it will be sluggish if you try to drive it, assuming throttle sensor and MAP sensor are not working
