It seems very unlikely I'm the first to think of this and it didn't take a genius to come up with it, but I can't find this idea on YouTube or by searching the internet, so writing a thread about it seems like a good idea. To dissemble your C-2 power steering pump (to replace the seals) you need to press the back part of the pump, where the high pressure line threads in, into the pump body and flatten a dished washer-like spring called a Belleville spring. This makes it easy to remove the snap ring holding the back part in the body. Videos and write-ups that show or describe how to do this have people using a large vise or very large C-clamp, neither of which I have. I noticed that the three mounting ears for the pump are equally spaced around the circumfrence of the body, so I figured a large three-armed gear/bearing puller ought to be able to do the trick, and these can be borrowed from the parts stores. I decided to use a small nut to spread the pressure from the screw to a bigger area. Getting everything setup so it doesn't pop off while tightening is tricky, but doable. The spring only has about 1/8 inch of travel, so there's no threat of the puller flying off the pump. When it's clamped down, it looks like this.
Another trick I'll share with you is that an 8 penny nail with the point flattened works nice for pressing on the snap ring. It gets jammed in the hole and stays put once the clip is pushed, which acts like a third hand to hold the clip where it's easy to grab with a pick.
