I have the common odometer not working problem, research says the plastic worm gear is bad. I have a non tach instrument cluster. My research also shows 96/97 Explorer as an interchange w/ a tach. My question is if I bought the explorer unit is it in fact a direct swap and will I then have a working tach when I reattach the wiring? Has anyone done this swap using the Explorer unit? Thx, Dick

I didn't check all the pins but it looks similar.
The tach RPMs comes from the computer after 1994, so engine size doesn't matter to the tach display, 1994 and earlier would have a switch, for 4 or 6 cyl
Here are the wiring diagrams for 1996 Ranger 2.3l and 1996 Explorer 4.0l, 5.0l is the same.
I will let you go thru all the pins, yes the tach wire should be at the dash even though there is no tach on the cluster, but have a look when you pull it out.
