Change Mileage on Odometer
 

This is a howto on RPS that my friend Nick came up with when he rolled the miles on a Sport Trac i bought from him

Seems like that should be illegal? Is there any place else(llike the computer) that tracks mileage? Cause why don't I just roll my truck back to 45k miles?

i believe the computer can keep track of mileage, dont know 100%...

but if you are caught with Odometer Fraud you can get in trouble...

however, This is a mod for guys that swap their guages out and need/want to match up the mileage to show the CORRECT amount of miles

The law tells you not to. Technically (at least here in NH) you are supposed to report if the odo is incorrect. There's actually a check-box for it on the NH title paperwork. It says something like:

_ The odometer is not correct in this vehicle. The actuall estimated mileage is
__________ miles.
_ unknown.

The seller is responsible for filling that info out when the title changes hands. Presumably the buyer would see this and not buy if they don't want to.

Its not illegal if you are changing the mileage to reflect the actual mileage. Its only illegal when you represent the incorrect(lower) mileage as being the legitimate mileage on the vehicle.

You are commiting no crime by correcting the milege on a new odometer to reflect the accurate mileage on your truck.

FYI. Up to 2003, no computer on the Ranger was recording mileage. 2004 & Up is different because the clusters are all digital and need to have it stored somewhere.

What about someone like myself, when about 2k miles ago the odometer just stopped working? Illegal to NOT have it fixed?

i dont think you will have any problem unless you try to sell the truck and say that the incorrect mileage is the correct milage

Seems pretty simple, but why do you need to hook the battery up to the speedo? Is that just a test to see if it all moves correctly?

Nope.. I don't think so anyway. But it is illegal to misrepresent the mileage by claiming the odo is accurate.

Having a broken or incorrect odo would strike me as a problem when trying to sell a vehicle, just as having a salvage title would be. You'd always loose buyers that aren't willing to investigate or take your word on the actual state of the vehicle.

not that im going to(damn laziness), but if i were to roll my milage back, i'd be afraid to move it back any further than what it was at in april when i had my inspection done.. that's all they'd need to do was read a higher number there when i get it inspected again next year. i'd probably get a call asking what the hell did i do to it

you cant just slap the needle on, it has to be put on exactly the way it was to begin with for it to read properly, so using this method stops you from guessing what to set it at

each battery will read a different speed (it acts like a volt/amp reader) so you use the same battery before and after and it will show the "speed" of the battery, and once you put it all back together you do the battery again and set it properly

That portion of it right there would be very helpful for aftermarket gauge installs, and if anybody does a detailed how-to, they should incorporate that.
