creakin steerin wheel????

Steering wheel creaks loudly everytime i turn. Noticed it more when it turned cold outside. Anyone else had or have this prob?? Recommend fix or take to the dealer?

Dealer if you’re under warrantee. Is the noise coming from under the hood or the steering column?

Colum. sounds like it right where the wheel and colum meet. Possible clock spring??

Blhde 11-28-2008 09:54 PM

Mine has done this when super cold. Say below -15.

Sounds terrible.

If your under warranty go head and take it in. It might just need some lube in the bearing.

pace51 11-28-2008 10:04 PM

I'd vote clock spring. Do you have a b/l on the truck?

hozII 11-29-2008 10:37 AM

Nope no bl yet. All stock. i think im gonna run it down to the dealer today and just see what he says. see if its something i can do myself. I'll let you guys know the out come. thanks

hozII 11-29-2008 07:13 PM

OK, got down to the dealer today. They had to lube something behind the sterring wheel. took about 30 mins i think they had to pull the wheel. but he didn't charge me anything!!!! and no i'm not under warranty anymore 47k.

Mine makes a popping sound occasionally when turning and it sounds like it's coming from the column and steering wheel.

Briggslite 11-29-2008 11:56 PM

Mine too...I took it in and they claimed to fix it, but thats a negative.

Yeah i had a 04 edge before this truck and it did that too my dads 04 edge does the same thing but they only did it when turning real sharp. I think it had something to do with the front suspension. I guess that's normal? My Level II hasn't done it though at least not that i've ever noticed as of yet.

only when it gets pretty cold has mine been creaking through the beginning of a turn. i have a BL idk if that matters tho. i dont think its to worry

hozII 11-30-2008 12:21 PM

Yeah i agree and usually you can't hear it when the radio is up. But its still aggravating when its not and you hear it. I just got it lubed yesterday so we'll see how it TURNS out..HAHA....get it TURNS out? UH yeah i need to get out more....LOL!!!

1999Rangerlockednlifted 11-30-2008 12:27 PM

U know this thread is old but my 06 just started doing this here when it just started getting really cold. DId anyone ever find a fix for it, or a how to for this to be done or what? I know you said you went to the dealer and they lubed something for free, but the dealers around here def aren't going to do anything for free and just curious on how to fix it. It gets quit annoying.

Tys 4x4 FTW 11-20-2010 04:49 AM

mine was doing it for a little while. but it has recently stopped. beats me. lol

ZWilson07 11-21-2010 02:54 AM

ha well thats good but mine still does it lol. and the ole turn the stereo up fix is getting old lol. anymore info?

ZWilson07 01-01-2011 04:13 PM

hozll do you remember exactly what they had ti lube or what they called it?

jaymann 05-05-2015 08:56 AM

I had a creaking sound coming from what felt like the steering wheel whenever I turned. I sprayed silicone lubricant on the steering column where it enters a pipe under the dashboard. It was above the brake pedal and easy to find. The creaking went away immediately.
