Explorer lighted visors help

I just asked the guys on the Explorer forums but I figured i'd give it a shot here too. I bought this set off of eBay for my Ranger yesterday and was wiring them up tonight and ran into a problem.

As I was going to connect my power wire in the bullet connector the connector pulled off the wire inside the mirror and now there's not enough wire sticking out for me to connect them together. Is there anyway to take the mirror apart to put a longer wire inside or am I just screwed. I don't want to have wasted money on these things, so if you guys could help me out that would be awesome.

sorry to say but you might have to take them all the way apart and try to connect inside the visor otherwise you might be f u c * e d

Any clues on how to take it all the way apart?

Is there any way you can solder new wire on? It dosent take that much room to get it done.

I looked at that, put theres not much wire sticking out for me to get a good connection. If worst comes to worst I'll try doing that but I dont think its gonna work. I'd much rather just take the whole thing apart and put in a new wire so I don't have to worry about it later on.

Let us know how it goes. I am interested in how this is gonna turn out Trent.

Yeah if it doesnt work out it looks like I might just be making a trip to the JY. The passenger side should work fine, I'll wire that one up tomorrow and see though. Should be a cool mod when I'm done. I'm suprised more people haven't put them in Rangers yet. I think if I do end up going to the JY I'm going to look for one that has the Homelink garage door opener and reminder recorder, that would be a cool thing to have as well. I'll report back with what happens.

I was thinking and I think I might have figured out a way to fix this, if I can get the wire out enough to strip it a little bit and slip a butt connector over it that should let me connect the 2 wires together. I'll try in the morning, hopefully this will work.

I would help you if i had a pair of those visors my self but i don't...hope you get r done...want to see how it looks and i've thought about that mod with my girl but didn't know if anyone else has done it so hope all goes well!!

I have a set of lighted explorer visors in my ranger. I think if I remember correctly we had to solder extra wire onto the power wire. I did mine like a year ago so I don't remember too much about it. It's a great mod IMO. Good luck

That's how I did mine, just used a butt connector and added more wire. Just remember in order to get a good ground you might have to add more wire around the spring so it's touching the chassis. The mounting holes are a little different from an explorer than a ranger.

Can we get some pictures of some that have been installed?

Had the same problem w/ mine when I got the Exploder visors.

Taking the visor apart didn't work well for me - both sides of the visor have metal teeth that get pressed together. I couldn't get them back together so it looked right so I ended up taking the parts out of the Exploder visor and putting them in my Ranger visors.

I put the pre-95 explorer lighted visors, i think they matched better...i don't remember it's been forever. I put the OHC, autodim mirror and the visors all at once (I recommend it!).

That might be why my passenger one isn't coming on, how did you add more wire around the spring?

I took a 6" piece of 18awg wire and stripped the whole length and just wrapped it around the spring. Here's a quick pic of it.

The key is to get the wire on the outside of the mounting point so it touches the chassis.
