Built a platform for my "backseat"

Well I decided to get rid of the terrible bumps and humps in the "backseat" of my supercab. I built a platform out of MDF, painted it black, and put carpeting on the top. I think it turned out pretty good. One of the pics has dimensions. I didn't search, but maybe there are others who have done something similar?

I built a platform kind of like that out of wood. Mine sets up a little higher and I used 7 legs about 1.5" in diameter to hold the platform up so I could have access to the storage area under it. I also used gray carpet to cover the shelf but I wrapped it around the edge of the shelf to have a soft edge too. I painted the poles gray to blend in with the carpet.

Now I can throw all kinds of crap (tow strap, air compressor, jumper cables, battery charger, snow chains, etc.) under it and the area behind the seats still looks clean. I originally put it back there so I can set my refrigerator there on a flat surface. I had to removed the rear folding seats to make room because I have the four door Supercab.

Nice installation Tony.

Needs some hinged access panels on top to keep things stored/locked inside and out of the way.

Looks good!

i'll post pics when i'm done...i'm actually doing a worklog.

the bottom of the box will be like what you did...i'm eiminating the humps. Except i'm using legs (2x2 wood) and it is going to be a little different

Thats pretty much why I built it. I'll finish the construction of the box next week when I have more free time. Being able to make it a cube is alot easier than trying to fit the box's dimensions to the crazy humps and bumps in that area. So now its a flat surface, and it looks better.

thanks for the compliments.

2 door and no jump seats. When i first bought it I was like damn this truck is bare bones, and coming from an SVT i really noticed how it was bare bones, now its like, no one wants to sit in a jump seat anyway.

yeah they are pretty crappy to sit in, but same in a focus.
my wife used to have a zx5, same dimensions as a 3 just with 2 more doors.
does the area behind your seat on the sidewall have any storage value?

Well there are the two compartments on the sides of the back, I have a can of fix a flat in one of them. They aren't very useful, but I still have access to them. Until I get a tonneau cover the backseat is my only real storage area.

I love the idea but I see only one thing i would change. I would split the top in two and add hinges for even more storage.
