FX4 Level II floor mats splitting apart ... AGAIN

About 5 months and 3000 miles ago, I had my LII floor mats replaced under warranty. The ribs were torn away and allowing water to go through to the carpet.

https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ead.php?t=6870

Well, I looked at them today and the replacement mats have failed in exactly the same way. There is a flat area with no ribs near the gas pedal but it is in no way big enough for my size 13's. So my heel rests on the ribs and slowly destroys them.

I guess I'm doomed to oil, filter and floor mat changes every 3000 miles until my warranty runs out. Then I'll look for an alternative. Maybe a plastic floor like the Edges and 06 LII's have.

Bob, I cleaned the backside of the floor mat really well around the area where my heel rests. I then poured a somewhat flexible urethane on that backside area to fill the grooves. Once it hardened I put it back in my truck. The mat has held up well since then and the truck now has a little over 50,000 miles on it.

Yes, I could have gone out and bought new floor mats but I like these mats and would prefer to keep them. I think I told you before the Ford dealer would not honor the warranty on them.

Wow man, mine are still in one peice. As I've said before, the floor mats are one of the few components of this truck I don't have any complaints w/!

That carpet->vynl floor swap sounds interesting. Although I had the vynl floor in my '99 XL.. and hated it. When it's wet (rain, snow) it is super slick. I had a friend slip when crawling into my truck once and just about impale herself on the gearshift. Gave her a pretty good black and blue on the jaw. I felt pretty bad about it..

I had the plastic floor in my 2000 XL Trailhead and have the same reservations about it. I may end up doing the swap eventually, though. The XL and Edge plastic floors are different but I don't know if one is better than the other.

That dealer did you a disservice - mine is covering my mats for a second time. And I won't hesitate to take these replacements back if they fail before my warranty is up.

I like your urethane idea and may try it someday. I have also thought about modifying the mats to eliminate the ribs altogether in the high wear area under the heel. I now have some extra PS mats that could donate the needed material.

Oh it is? I wasn't aware of that. So the Edge floor is more of a rubber? That would probably be okay. I ended up laying down some rubber aftermarket mats in my truck.. that improved things a lot.

The floors are different on different models. My 2000 XL had a random textured pattern but the Edges I've seen have small blocks. I don't know if the material itself is different or if one offers better traction than the other.

The edge flooring, with its unique texture, is much better than the old XL vinyl-grain variety. I've had absolutely NO slippage issues with mine. Considering a new one can be had for around $100 (I paid ~80 for my reg. cab one, the super can't be that much more) I think its worth the money.. hell, its barely more than a good set of all-weather floor mats! When I put my new ones in I want to get a set of rubber mats over them just to keep it new looking, but I've grown to prefer the rubber floor over carpeting, and I think of it as a value-adding feature, not a cheapener like most seem to feel.

I think it's EPDM rubber like is used for RV roofs and what not -- but I don't remember. Whatever the Edge floor is, it's pretty tough.
