Help door filled up with water!

Ok so today we had some heavy rains this morning. I walked out of class and opened my driver side door and hear all this water sloshing around inside? I have no idea how it got in there it has never done it before and it isnt leaking out anywhere just trapped inside. Anyone had this happen or know what to do. I may take the door panel off tonight to get a better look.

If you look at the bottom of the doors there are little plastic peices you can pop out

Earl43P 01-29-2008 11:31 AM

Probably a bad seal (the outer seal where your elbow rests with the window open).

Pretty sure the seal around the door opening frame won't let the door fill with water.

Redneckstone 01-29-2008 11:39 AM

ya look under the bottom of the door there is holes for draining.. those shouldnt be plugged up...

Roach2004 01-29-2008 12:31 PM

Oh yea I removed the plugs in my door about a year ago and no water since

PW01 01-29-2008 12:33 PM

:stupid: I would also spray some rust inhibitor inside that door, once I got everything clean and dry.

Water is better than a drunk girl puking all over your door on New Years, I still feel sorry for my buddy. New truck smell no longer for him.

Ok went out to truck after work and no water so i duno what the hell happened. It rained yesterday and it didnt fill up at all so I dont see how the seal would have went bad overnight? maybe it did

n3elz 01-29-2008 04:57 PM

Mine does that in very heavy rains. Also when I get stuck in 3 foot deep water...

RicksTJR 01-29-2008 06:41 PM

Haha yeah I imagine 3 feet of water would do that.

The "seals" in the upper part of the doors are in no way watertight. That's why the doors need unobstructed drain holes in the bottom.

Question: Can this cause the very bottom lip to rust? 'cause my doors look like they are about have holes from rust.

Most car/truck doors have a folded sheet metal crimp at the bottom where the door skin is attached to the framework. This is a natural water trap and the situation is that much worse if the drains are plugged. Adding road salt to the mix speeds up the corrosion process dramatically.

I like to spray a little motorcycle chain lube in that area when the vehicle is new and then periodically throughout its life. This is easiest to do with the inner door panel removed. Chain lube has a volatile carrier that helps to wick the lubricant into small crevices between chain parts. This wicking action also seems to work well to get some protection down in that lower door skin crimp, separating the air/water/salt from the steel. I use the same procedure for the lower edge of the tailgate - another rust trouble area.

Thanks for the help Rwenzing. I think I'm going to check out those plug and make it a job to spray some of that lube in my doors and tailgate, maype por15 the doors at the bottom one day.

getting the door panels off will prove to be a bigger pita than you think. I tried that twice now, and them door panels are still holding strong. they REFUSE to come off LOL

Thanks for that heads up. I look forward to this now.

I know this is a super old thread, but I just came across this problem myself today. I had her parked on the side of the road on a hill, but pulled it into the garage to look closer, but as soon as I got into the flat garage, there seemed to be almost no water left in the doors. assuming the drains work best when the truck is flat. Is this something to be concerned about? Does it ever cause the speakers in the doors to get wet?

Each door has 2 drains. You probably have your back one clogged thus not letting it drain when parked on an upslope.
