The cluster will fit in a 97 and most of it will work. You may have problems with an idiot light or two. They changed over the years.
These all look like 2WD clusters (no 4X4 indicator lights).
A couple of old ones:

Usually, the black Ranger clusters are the same 4x4 or 4x2 because the cutouts don't show nearly as much.
Here is a 4x2 ST cluster. The 4x4 indicators would be on the right side next to the voltmeter. Having the very visible but unused indicators could cause confusion and possible irritation with some customers. So, Ford makes two slightly different clusters.

when you take the cluster apart ( into its 3 pieces) just undo the 4 screws around the perimeter and pull the needleand it should pop right out, but be warned your gonna have some fun gettin your speedo back right
I recommend just leaving it now and writing down your correct mileage and wait to change it until you really need to.

I got my mileage up with a drill. Take off the small gear in front and use the little pole to insert into the drill. I screwed up and went way over, so I rolled it back but decided I liked my original better. If anyone wants the white odometer just pm me, it's yours just pay the shipping.
**Also remember you may need to swap out your SLOSH unit. If your truck SLOSH is smaller than the ST, leave the ST slosh in there. If it is the same size and makes contact with the electrical strips, you might be ok...drive it around some. Some say swap it out no matter what, this was not the way to go in my case**
The tach and speedo arent to hard. Just hook everything up except for the little window bezel and crank the truck. The speedo and tach will automatically set to its current energized postition...all you gotta do it pry the needles off and put them at 0 for speedo and 700-800 RPM for the tach while at idle. I didnt do that 45mph setting technique, I tested my accuracy with a friend afterwards...dead on.
