On warm days, after I have driven somewhere, parked, then come out a little while later and begin to drive, there is a rattling noise that comes from my shift ****/shifter. It never does it when starting cold and driving somewhere. Only after it's warm, and been parked for a short time on a warm/hot day.

I have already tried tightening it, moving it higher and lower on the threads, and I recently put some plumbing tape around the threads and screwed it back on. The plumbing tape helped a little bit, but the noise is still noticible if I listen for it.

I had Ford look at it a month or two ago, and after argueing back and forth about it actually being a stock shifter, all they did was tighten it so tight (still rattled), I had a hard time getting it off again.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss for ideas right now...

PS. I'm hoping against this, but there is a possibility that maybe there is a rattling somewhere in my tranny that is just being amplified and/or carried up through the shifter...but let's hope not.

 

It could be that the shift lever itself is loose, my hurst does that when it needs to be re-loctited. I can just grab the shift **** and it'll stop, sounds just like what you are describing.. Good luck

 

Every dual shifter LII that I've been in has a lot of noise from the shifter area. I personally think that most of the noise is from the transfer case, telegraphed up through the TC shifter. In addition to the main noise, my transmission shifter also "rings" in 3rd gear.

There is no fix. I've had my truck in the dealer a couple of times and a Ford factory rep spent a day diddling with it, too. All they managed to do was crack my shifter bezel and screw up the TC linkage adjustment.

I know of another owner who had his transmission and transfer case replaced under warranty for this and it didn't change anything.

After installing a bunch of Dynamat and adding some weight to the transmission shifter, I have made some gains but it still is not right.

I definitely like the dual shifter concept but not the execution. Maybe that's why it was discontinued after only 2 years.

 

I'm pretty sure it's not the t-case noise, because I hear that and it's two different things. I've had some parts in the t-case replaced including the ****er arms (both t-case and tranny) aswell as both shift boots under warrenty b/c the dealer thought that was the problem.

But I will check the arm itself like BJ said. But where did you put the Dynamat stuff Bob? Because the **** isn't hollow like I thought.

 

I put 2~3 layers of Dynamat on the transmission tunnel under the carpet to quiet the TC noise a little.

If it is definitely the transmission shifter and it does it in any gear, you could check the **** carefully. Another member here had a cracked shift **** that was hard to see but it was causing a rattle.
