OHC install plus helpful hints...

I did my OHC install in the '03 I recently got. Second install I've done, but it's been about 5 years since the last one. Works great and I took the time to solder everything, neatly route and hide the wires, etc. I am picky about that stuff.

Anyway...this might be some helpful stuff when doing this install for others. I cut the section of headliner out of the wrecked Explorer I pulled it from and it made a good pattern to cut the headliner. If you follow this pattern, especially towards the back, theres enough Ranger headliner left so it pulls it (sandwiches) against the OHC & bracket as you tighten down the rear OHC screws so there is no need to stuff anything in the headliner to fix the gap that usually results. Kinda hard to explain, but if you have put one of these in you know what I mean. Also, the dome light as we all know is a real pain to get off without breaking. I bought this set of plastic trim remover tools a year or two ago and it had this weird shaped one that just happened to work great on the dome light. Popped the lens right off with no effort or breakage. I was able to release the lens from the back side easily. Also, the little grabber flexible thing (whatever you call it) works great for fishing the power wires through the headliner from the dome light area to the OHC.

The best part is that the OHC and all it's components only cost me $10 at the salvage yard/U-pull and I maybe have $20 in new wire (was running low) and an afternoon invested.

Those dome light lenses are a PITA to get off. I was always afraid I'd break something getting it off.

Great idea with the template! You should hang onto that..pass it along to the next guy doing one!

Not if you use that tool I showed the pic of. I wrestled with it for awhile by hand and tried that...came right off

Sure...I'll send it to anybody if they pay for the shipping. I obviously have no use for it anymore and it'd just end up in the trash.
