OHC Temp Display
 

I just finished installing an OHC and it went pretty well…except for the tap connectors I used -- they were worthless.

I’ve noticed that the temp display takes a about a minute or so to update itself with the current temperature when the car’s been sitting for a while

For example – temp was displaying 69 degrees when truck was turned off in afternoon. Started truck back up about 4 hrs later during the evening when it was considerably cooler. The display initially displayed 69 then it counted down and settled at 50 degrees over a minute or so.

Is this normal?

Did you hook up the VSS sensor wire?

Yes - VSS wired up

Mine doesn't do that. It usually starts up with the correct temp. I wonder if yours is newer or older and has a different feature?

Where did you put the Temp Sensor at? It also could be a bad sensor, bad connection ect.

The temp sensor is mounted behind the front grill to the right near the headlight.

sounds like the VSS isnt wired properly. Double check it becase thats exactly the kind of stuff mine did before i taped into the VSS

I'm having the same problem guys. I know it's not the temp sensor because I got a new one. My problem? I have no idea what VSS stands for. I'm going to guess it's some kind of speed sensor. But I don't really know. A check of both my Ranger and Explorer HAYNES manuals says NOTHING about a VSS sensor. So please tell me what the heck it is and where on the truck do I find it.

Vehicle Speed Sensor. It's the part that tells the computer how fast you are going, and supposedly adjusts your temp sensor readout to try to eliminate as much affect from wind chill or at idle in hot weather.

Thanks John. My manual says the speed sensor is on the rear axel and has to do with the anti-lock brake system. Is that the one or is there another.

The gray/black wire from the OVC clamps onto the gray/black wire running out of the GEM in the stereo hole. Check it out, http://www.cardomain.com/ride/296394/4. This should solve your problems.

yeah, you splice into the sensor inside the truck, on it's way to the computer.

Guys - your replies make it look like the VSS connection is the problem. I've already got it tapped into the gray/black wire as it goes into my 4x4 module box (my 2004 4x4 does not have a GEM). I'll recheck the connections and get back to you with the results.

04+ is different:

peed Sensor Input (Explorer Gray/Black at console)-
2003-back Ranger: Gray/Black at GEM
2004-on Ranger: Gray/Black at Smart Junction Box (brown connector)

Justin - I saw (I think on this board) that you can tap into the VSS (gray/black wire) at the 4x4 box on a 2004. The 4x4 box is just behind the radio where you would expect to find the GEM.

Can someone confirm that I can tap in to the VSS at this spot?

I've checked my connections and everything looks good. Interesting - that the temp readings have settled down since the first day. Thanks for the help. Think I'm good to go!
