Overhead Console Temp Sensor Part #
 
Guys if you bought a new sensor from a dealer would you do me a favor? If you bought service part # F3TZ-15A022-A or F87Z-12A647-AA. I need the engineering part # off the sensor. It is around the barrel of the sensor and will start like F37F or F87F-XXXXXX-XX.

I have a sensor that was supposed to be correct but I'm getting 40 F on a 75+ F day. My sensor starts with F3LY-12A647-AA.

You probably have the EATC temp sensor, Brian. It is a higher impedance sensor than the console sensor. Higher impedance ==> lower temp reading.

Mine doesn't have an engineering part number on it but the correct numbers for the parts system are:

Sensor: F87Z-12A647-AA
Connector/pigtail kit: 3U2Z-14S411-MEA

Thank you for the quick reply That is the one for the '98 and up consoles. I just found out from the guy whom I bought it from that mine is a 97 an uses the F3TZ-15A022-A.

The early and late console sensors are electrically interchangeable but they may need to have the correctly shaped connector to plug into. The EATC sensors can also look the same but are electrically different.

If you go to a junkyard for a console sensor, look for blue/yellow and blue/white wires to the connector. The EATC sensor connector has pink/black and red/orange.

Weird, but that would be great. I have access to the parts system here at work and it did list the two differnt ones. My concern is with the computer in the OHC. The f3 is 25 bucks and the F8 is 14. Can you do me a favor and take a picture of your connector? I have a pigtail as well and I'll email a pic to you as well.

Mine looks like the one on the bottom. I don't know if I have the old or new sensor version because I got it used - I was guessing it is the newer one because it came with the later model console with the green display (98~2001). :shrug:

Mine looks like the top one, but has the pink/black red/yellow wires. The part number is just under the hex. If I can find someone who has the top one and can give me the part number on it I'll be set because my socket will work.

If it is the sensor that come with that pigtail, then it is the one for the EATC - that's why the temp reading is wrong.

I know :) I just want to find out the part # for the top one. On another thing I think you have the older 15A022 because there are two 96 consoles kits right now and the both have the cigal sensor. According to the computer it changed in '98 but doesn't say when.

Yep yours is an oldie. I traced it all the way back to 1984. I also found the resitance table for the Ambient air temp and the overhead temp sensors. Man they are WAY different. The reistance is triple of one to the other which as you said will lower the temp.

Yeah, about 30 kilohm for the EATC sensor at room temperature, 10k for the console sensor.

The sensor price is right. All of Ford's repair pigtails are pricey but you can't get some of them anywhere else. Some are a lot more than $20, too.

So I got the above part numbers today, wired it up, and found something fishy. Before I shrink-wrapped the connections, I tested the resistance with my DMM, set on 2000k. It showed -489. I didn't know which resistance setting to use, so I was then going to check with 200k and 20k settings. But then when I checked again it showed 1, which is basically what my meter shows when there is infinite resistance, like the probes not touching anything. I tried a couple more times and the same thing happened.
The temp display all along showed 18F when it was a solid 65-70f outside.
What gives? I can't get this thing to show the right temp and it's driving me nuts. Especially after I spent $40 ensuring I had the right sensor.

An open circuit will give a display of -40 F or C. It sounds like you may have a poor, high resistance connection somewhere in the sensor circuit.

Have someone watch the display while you wiggle each connection. If the reading changes, you will know where the problem is.

The only other possibility I can think of is that you have a sensor for the EATC instead of the overhead console. It has a different resistance to temperature curve.

Yep... I was sure that was the problem, but then I went and got the F87Z-12A647-AA from the dealer to rule that out. I guess I'll check for kinks in the wiring etc this weekend and see if I can't track down the problem there.
Any chance the electronics in my OHC are just whacky? That isn't likely is it?

I just had a thought. 18C = 64F. Is there any chance that you have it displaying Celsius instead of Fahrenheit?? Try pressing the MODE button to toggle between the two temperature scales.

Well, that wasn't the case, but this since this morning the things been dead on. I guess when I put the new sensor in it just needed to reset? Either way I'm relieved.
