For some reason when I spray the adhesive promoter on my bezel it is making like this crackling effect on the plastic and is really making it look $hitty. It is really starting to **** me off. After it happened the first time, I sanding it down again then sprayed. Well, it happened again. What gives? I know how to spray paint. My dad thinks it is called "Orange Peeling." Could it be that the bezel is warm from me sanding it and the paint it garage temperature cold (49 degrees here). I reallly want to get this thing back in.

 

can temp is probably REALLY cold for painting, same with the air temp. did you get all the rubbery junk off yet? Then followed that up with a nice 600grit final sand?

 

Ya, I had 600 grit on it. I peeled all of the rubbery stuff off. I am guessing it is just cause of the cold even though I have never had this problem before in the cold.

 

You just have to wait until a nice warm day man. I had the same problem with my bezel. Keep the cans in your room to let the warm up and wait until a day when it's at least 65 degrees before you try again. Make sure to do light coats, but not too light or it will cause orange peel. You may want to wet sand it down to get a nicer finish on it. But just take your time.. Because it will pay off.

 

fill your bathroom sink with hot water. Put the can of paint in a ziplock baggie, and place the can in the baggy in the hot water. Let it stay there about 10 minutes or so. This will heat the paint up and it should spray properly.

Little model trick i learned a few years back..whenever i paint something in this time of the year, I always do it.

So, it has like the veins in it right now. If I heat the paint up, will it fill the veins in or do I need to sand the thing again? I just have the promoter on it. No paint

 

nothing will fill those veins....resand and start over. Might just need a quick scuff.

veins? sounds like the adhesion promotor attacked the paint underneath it. Gotta sand it. You have a problem with the solvent penetrating the substrate and its moving it. Probably putting the adhesion promotor on too wet. its aggresive ****.

I have some toreador red paint that I was gonna put on it but I dont know if it is gonna look good or not.

 

Ok well I got it sanded and painted up toreador red. It looks alot better this time. I just do not know if I want it red or paint it black.

Regarding the OP, it's just too damn cold out to spray paint.


Use lacquer thinner to remove all the paint currently on it, and then spray it with brake cleaner or a paint prep degreaser. Rinse it off, and then apply your paint. I didn't use any adhesion promotor on mine, I just simply sprayed the ground coat on the bare sanded plastic and then applied my top coat and clear coat and it came out mint.

I also painted indoors at room temperature. The first time I painted it, I had left the door open with cold air coming in from outside and the corner that was nearest the cold air ended up crackling on me like you're experiencing, so it is definetly the temperature that is affecting your paint.

 

Time is everything man, if your in a hurry its going to come out looking terrible.

 

Ya I took my time the first time. I think the paint was to cold. I got it all done. Hopefully install it later this evening and have some pics maybe.

I tried painting some this weekend and I'm going through the same crap. Painting FTMFL!!!

ARGGGGGGGG!! That is all.

 

I ran into 1 problem. I was prepping my radio bezel for paint. I sanded all the old paint off,sanded it for 3hrs. Cleaned it up and I sprayed on the adhesion promoter and in places on the bezel it would turn white and cracks would appear. I have never seen anything like it before. I wet sanded the white spots and cracks with 220 and painted it and it turned out good. Anyone else run into the same problem?

 

The Duplicolor stuff is great. I just cleaned the snot out of mine, then hit it with three coats of the ground coat, about five of the Metalcast blue, and then three coats of Duplicolor clearcoat and I am thrilled.

I had problems with mine dimpling in spots. I busted it up with 200 grit paper hard and worked my way to wet 2000.

 

To each their own. I painted mine red, and my cup-holder unit too. I think I did my A/C vents too, I think I just painted the glossy black. I ended up hating the color and bought a new bezel in the end and a center console.
