Building a rear box.. What size plywood?
I am going to build a box like many have to store my electonics and stuff in under my rear seats. What size plywood should I use? 1/4" or 1/2"? I want it to be sturdy but want the most for my money in storage. It will only be about 7" high so the thinner the better. I am not a carpender so help is needed! THANKS!

I used MDF, its thick enough and strong.

if ur not putting and subwoofers in then i would say 1/2" MDF is more than enough. its easier to work with than wood.

Is that Home Depot type material or do I need to go somewhere special for that stuff?

yeah you can buy it at home depot i've bought it before in i think 2' x 4' sheets

can't remeber how much exactly but i know a full 4' x 8' sheet is about $12.00 so if you go with the smaller sheets i mentioned before it should be less. for some reason $6.88 is sticking in my mind.

MDF is fiber board or is it just another type of composit material?

Medium Density Fiberboard

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF or MDFB) is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down softwood into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and resin, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. It is a building material similar in application to plywood but made up of sawdust. It is denser than normal particleboard.

They'll even cut it for you at Home Depot. You buy the whole sheet...pretty big. And they can cut the pieces you need for free.

At least it was free at my home depot

MDF is great. we build cabinets and shelves and such with MDF sheets. Alot of our trim is also MDF, and its great because its really flexible for a great fit.

about half of the material i used in my living room is MDF

and even the tiniest dings and dents as well as larger gaps in joints can be filled with wood putty and sanded to a PERFECT, glassy finish

oh yeah, but the dust SUCKS!! after a good amount of sanding with the random orbital, i can blow out some nice MDF boogers

^^ drywall dust lol... that sucks...we ddrywalled our basment and had to cut almost every piece and i had cotton mouth and plasterd shut nostrels lol

What about bedliner or undercoating? i did a sub box with it and it looked great.

Ive always used 3/8 mdf and its plenty thick, works great..

Yeah that is my eventual plan but for now I thought the paint would do (until the cash begins to flow again).
