Shorty console paint question

So, I recently attempted to paint a portion of my black shorty console to see how it would turn out.

After a couple of days, I noticed that it was getting scratches and smudge marks all over the painted section (the top lid)

Note that I used Krylon fusion, and no clear coat.

Should I have used clear coat? Or is there a product that would be less vulnerable to scratches and scuff marks?

Thanks guys.

Wirelessly posted

You could try a light layer of clear, it won't really stop the scratches, just make it easier to get them out and clean it.

A heads up, last time I tried to use a clear coat ontop of Krylon Fusion, the clear coat beaded up like rain on a windshield that has been treated with Rain-X.

I might be wrong, but that sounds like "solvant pop".

How long did you wait after applying the krylon fusion before you applied the clear?

This has happened to me before as well. I didnt let the paint dry enough before putting the clear on.

Oh yeah, I havnt done anthing to the console yet either. I took it our of the truck because I got mad with it lol.

To be honost it was about 4 years ago and I dont remember exactly but I think I waited 4 hours to put the clear on but I cant say for sure. I actually had an old computer that I had stripped down and painted the case. When It was said and done it looked really good but had no clear on it. I had done it with normal spray paint and hadnt had it do that before, only when I used it with the Krylon Fusion. But like you said it could have been solvant pop so it would be worth a shot to let it sit over 24 hours (problubly what I should have done lol) and then see if you can get the clear to stick right.

I just thought I would mention what happened when I tried it and I could have done it wrong too.

That seems kind of weird for the Fusion to do that... I've used it many times with no problems like that!

I like the results from Dupont adhesion promoter and SEMS Paint… have never used a clear coat but no reason a no gloss clear coat wouldn’t help.

SEMs Paints are as close to OEM Interior Colors as I have found. Dupont makes great paint also and the two have worked for me without any flashing.
