Gauge Cluster

Gauge Cluster
Hey guys,
I have a crappy gauge cluster right now that does not include a tach in my 2000 XLT... I would like to know if I could change it out to one that does have the RPM guage and what I would need to do so... I know I'd need a sensor for that kind of deal, but I really don't know too much about engines and putting stuff in 'em. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
- Jeff

Actually a cluster with a tach is "plug and play" -- the wiring is already there. Just get a cluster from a 1998 to 2000, and probably 2001 and 2002 at least fit as well. I know 2004's won't, and 2003's I'm not sure at all.
I believe Explorer clusters for the same years fit as well. 2001 is probably the cutoff for those.

95~2003 Ranger, 95~2001 Explorer and 2003-back Sport Trac clusters will fit and the 6 main gauges should function. BUT there are many differences in the indicator light content and wiring across the various models and years. You may run into problems with non-functional or incorrect lights if you swap in a cluster from the wrong donor.
I agree with John that you'd probably be safest with a 98~2000 Ranger cluster.
If you have a 4x4, be sure that the 4x4 indicator lights are there. Rangers are usually OK but some others like Sport Tracs have different cluster faces for 2WD or 4WD.
Manual and automatic clusters are the same except you would need to swap the PRND21 indicator for the manual blanking plate if the replacement cluster came from a truck with the wrong transmission type.
