question about painting interior

I have painted the interior b4 but want to do more of a professional job. Eventually I'm going to buy a spray gun and other stuff and do it with SEM paint and clear coat... here's my question
I got my new edge valence 2nite from a guy and i was wondering....why can't I use normal paint? i think it would be easier it color match everything.
i read somewhere that it would eventually crack b/c of how flexible it is? but at the same time...i couldn't help but notice how flexible the valence was..and nothing happened... am i off in another world or is this makin sense to anyone?

Im not sure what you mean by "normal paint". Dont use spray cans, most of its laquer paint, and it doesn't hold up well, especially over a extended period of time. If you use quality paint, like omni, pgg, dupont, etc. it will last a long time if preped right. As far as flexing goes, if it can flex alot, it would be a good idea to mix a flex agent in with the paint.

I've heard that a flex additive will help but eventually it will probably crack, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. You will probably have plenty of paint chips by then.

Back in the old days I had an air dam painted at a real good body shop. It was for my 1977 Econoline. They told me they used a special additive in the paint. It did two things. It was flexible and it penetrated completely through the plastic. I could stand on the air dam and the paint never chipped. I plowed through a snow bank breaking the thing in half and you could see it was brown (the paint color) all the way through. Now I don't know if they still use additives but you could use a "normal" automotive paint and just mix what you needed.
It actually "colors" every bubble of plastic. It never chip or peeled all the years I had it before it got broken.

I used a flex primer called "Bull Dog" it come in a spray and I used it on my lower valance panel and knock on wood its still holding great after a year,I know of some body shops who use the same product....
