So this weekend I am going to be installing a sunroof in my 01' single cab ranger. While I am doing that I am going to remove the carpet and install some raamat in the cabin to make it a little bit less noisy from the road.

I saw a how to thread on an extended cab but it looks like the interior is a bit different. On my 01, I have side sills. Do those have to be removed in order to
get the carpet off the floor? All the screws on the side sills have rusted out heads that used to be philips heads but since they are rusted out I'd have to drill them out most likely....Just wondering what a solution would be. If I didn't have to remove the side sills to get the carpet out that would be GREAT!..hahah

I always pull them out. my 99 had screws but my 04 doesn't. You could pull the carpet without removing them but getting the carpet back under them when reinstalling may be tricky. You could try pushing it under there with a flat head screwdriver and work your way down. it may work but I've never tried doing it lol.

 

Awesome thank you! Do the screws go through the carpet? I wouldn't mind doing the screw driver trick to get them back in but I wouldn't want to pull the carpet out knowing that the screws are through the side sills and through the carpet only to rip the carpet out in a way...etc.

Do you know if the screws are just normal metal screws or if they are a specific thread? I will replace them if I have to drill them out but just wondering what type they are... hoping an easy out works.

I don't think they're attached to the carpet but I can't remember to assure that. I haven't had the 99 in about 5 years now lol. I do remember the screws being a standard short coarse thread screw with a fine point at the tip. I'm going to the salvage yard tomorrow after 4 to get some visual info for a mod I'm thinking about doing. I could take a look for one and see what the deal is haha

 

On my 04 Three of the Four screws per trim piece was rusted to death, i basically pulled them out. I replaced with new screws as JD said. Some of the carpet was through the screws but it is mainly pressure that holds it in from being screwed down. Trying to tuck the carpet back in would be a pain.

If memory serves me right this is an easy way to get it apart since I think you said you want to remove the headliner too.

Pull the door trim pieces your talking about now.
Pull the side bezels near your feet, it has stupid trim panel pieces and snaps in.
Pull the A/B Pillars (remove grab handles, I think my 04 had two 8mm bolts). then pull out Pillars.
Remove seat belt by unscrewing Torx bolt at floor and bolt at the top.
Remove rear trim panel, then you can remove the rear panel below the window.
Remove seats by unscrewing the 18mm (I think) bolts that hold it to the floor, plus the two that hold the middle passenger seat belt into place. Remove electrical connectors from under seat.
Remove cup holder bezel

I'm 99% sure you have to remove the top cover for the shifter if you have a Manual, can't remember what its technical name is but you'll see it when you remove the bezel. It had some sheet metal screws that held it down (I replaced with much longer ones once I put carpet in, it wouldn't squash down enough with the stubby screws they had on there. I wasted 1 hour, Just to save you time if they don't screw back down easily get longer ones, lol)

If you have never removed the seats before go under the truck and spray all four bolts per seat and the two that hold the middle seat belt with Penetrating oil several times. Mine where not to badly rusted, but the two with the seat belt I had to drill out....

Once you have it all out you can remove the head liner, I think it has those trim panel connectors and you have to remove the dome light. I haven't done it yet. You said you had an OHC so I'm sure you know 80%+ of everything I said, but you have your big project coming up so I just listed everything you'll need to know in one go.

I will most likely have to trill out the heads of the screws, which isn't as bad as I'm making it out to be. I feel like it's going to take longer to get the carpet OUT than it is going to be to install the sunroof.

Luckily I've removed my seats before when I replaced them with the newer 04' style ones so that isn't too bad, the headliner isn't too bad either, but I remember those B-pillars being a pain and I don't think I fully removed it when I did my rear glass re-seal since it was leaking a year or two ago...

I'll just take it one step at a time. Hopefully gutting the interior this Friday so on Saturday I can adjust for any unforeseen problems, which I'm sure there will be! hahaah

Your welcome, feel free to ask clarification on things. I wrote it up quickly.

Drilling out those screws will be easy, hell you can pry the whole piece up with little effort if need be and deal with the screws later. It isn't a problem that will hold up your project.

Since you already had the seats out it will be easy (hopefully you put some Anti-Seize on those bad boys). 3 minutes to remove seats then. The bottom kick panels will take 30 seconds to remove, the A/B pillars just need the grab handle bolts removed (pop covers with a pick) and then you just yank that bad boy out since it has metal clips that hold it. The rear panels kind of suck because the way the trim plugs are seated its a huge PITA to pull out even with a removal tool. I also had to drill out a seat belt bolt (driver side, not to mention the middle ones for the seat but that is a different story) to unhook it and unbolt from the cab.

You have already done a lot of what needs to be done in order to get the carpet out, after that its just the cup holder, two screws (6 if you have manual). Then the carpet is free, pull up. Headliner will probably only suck because its more delicate, I'd be afraid of ripping it by accident. I did it at a JY before to an explorer just to see how brittle they are.

I enjoy giving out information. It's only fair, it took me a while to gather it and then do it. R-F has been fantastic with helping me, i can only give it back. Especially since i didn't know zip about cars 12 months ago.

Your really making me want a Sunroof - Not sure if I'm happy or pissed at that, lol.
