Turn Signal lever
I might have to replace my turn signal lever and I was wondering, on a scale of 1 to 10 for a semi mechanical person like me, how difficult is it to do ?
I looked at it online and it seems like it's unbolt, unplug, remove, replace, plug in, bolt the new one on, right? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron |

Fog rider, it's the back of the lever which has come off and exposed the flat wire inside.
But I just wrapped it in hockey tape and it's covered now. I do have a problem with the turn signal blowing a fuse every once in a while. It seems like it's when I put it in park, I inadvertently push the " over drive off" button and poof. At least that seems to be the problem. I covered the end of the shift lever and so far it's been 6 weeks with out the fuse blowing. I'm hoping that this fixes this . Thanks for your insight. I appreciate it. Ron |
If your truck has tilt, take the top shroud cover off (three screws). On mine, when I would tilt the wheel all the way down, it was pulling one of the wires in the connector out and it would disconnect. Took a while to find the problem, but it was easy to fix. Hope this helps!

mhoward, it had a standard column.
So far it's behaving itself, and it it goes a couple of more weeks I am optimistic that it was the over drive button somehow creating a hot to ground. Thanks. :) Ron |
Hey, you can fix that too, with a used column from your local Pick N Pull! LOL JK (although that is what I did to mine)!

mhoward, did you have a signal short too?
And that fixed it for you? It might be worth a try if the short happens again. I don't even know how or when to use or turn off the over drive anyway. :) lol Ron |
I wasn't getting a short, just my turn signals on the rear weren't working. What I ended up doing was replacing the plastic connector that plugs into the multifunction (turn signal) switch. The hard pull on the wires caused the little clip that holds the wire in place broke. I had a spare from my old non-tilt column, so I put that in and made sure there was enough slack in the harness to ensure there was no tension on the connector. Has worked flawlessly now for a couple of years.
The OD switch is used when you have a need to prevent the trans from shifting into overdrive (5th gear). You can press the button anytime and it will function. I wouldn't recommend disengaging overdrive above 45MPH or so. |
I don't really have a need to turn it off really, so not using the button is not a problem.
I fixed the shifter cable bracket a while back because it was getting difficult to select the gear I wanted and the column was loose too. It helped but it might have loosened up again. I have seen on YT that it's a common problem with Fords of a lot of different models too and not only Rangers. Thanks. :) Ron |
I think that the OD off button is more for if you are pulling/towing something. Keeping your truck out of 5th gear when pulling a heavy trailer will give you more power. Otherwise, it isn't really useful. I have only hit the button a couple of times, and that was only to verify it still worked after having all of that apart... like when I installed my Lincoln chrome shift lever.
