how do i get the cluster out. i think i have all the screws out. i pull on it but it only moves a little. thanks

 

n/m i finally figured it out.

 

changed the cluster in my 96 today using the cluster from my old 02, the temp gauge was lazy on my 96. didn't see a good thread on the removal process so i decided to post it.

1. take the three screws off that hold the black plastic trim around the gauge, not try to remove it yet the black plastic trim is connected to the dash panel that the headlight switch and dimmer switch is screwed in.
2. then pop out the plastic panel piece under the steering column, to remove it completely you would have to unscrew the two bolts that hold the hood latch, i just left it on
3. unscrew the two top screws that hold the metal panel under steering column
4. push the metal panel down a bit and unscrew the two screws that hold the panel/trim in step 1
5. disconnect the headlight switch and dimmer switch and remove the panel/trim
6. now remove the four screws that hold cluster in place and disconnect the three harnesses.
7. turn the cluster sideways to remove it.

if i missed anything just add in

 

Does anyone know if the 94 model is different to r&r than the 96.

I opened my dash to remove the cluster and ran out of time, as well as majorly frustrated, it was hanging by the shift selector thing and I was afraid i would break it and i had to go somewhere soon anyway so I chose to wait to replace the bulbs. That was in September.

I have one light to light the whole cluster and it is located at the odometer. Not very good.

I have no desire to mod this cluster, this old 94 is my work truck, and it must work!

Help in the steps to r&r this bulb replacement would be very appreciated as well the number and size of bulbs to expedite the process.

Perhaps a sticky made for this process would be great.

I did search the forum, and this is the closest to what I have found to fit my need, is this thread.

Yes the 94 is different than the 96, 95 was the change over year.

 

i have searched the net and not found anything for this 94 year model nor 93.
Does anyone know of a 94 tutorial video for instrumentation light bulb replacement?

 

Just me BUT, the trim is held on with x number of screws! take them out, watch for clips, if there is some take care unsnapping or taking them out.

Next after the trim is off check for screws holding the cluster in place, remove them. Again, watch for clips and take care.
Remove the connectors and the cluster should be in your hands.
Look at the back of the Cluster, look for the Blub Sockets, usually they will twist and pull out, maybe not it has been sometime since I did an '88 dash.

I took mine out without ever taking one out before, threw it out and made a new one with AutoMeter Gauges so if I can do it anyone can, just take your time and learn as you go.

Think of it as a leaning experience and you will come out of it with knowledge to help someone else. If you think of it take some picture and do a How-To !

The last one I did was also an 88, a 323 Mazda 3 years ago. it was a load of fun too. but this beast will require to lower the steering column and the clips you mentioned are a challenge. I did get to the point to lower the column when I could clearly see I was not to have enough time and I needed this vehicle in less than an hour to head to bed and take off in the AM.

So here I am to day with a battery operated cap visor lamp to illuminate the cluster, and it does pretty well. Lol, kindy Red necky, but works. I will return in a few days with the results.

Did you have to do any modifications with the new cluster or was it plug it in and go? The drive gear for the odo crumbled and fuel gauge doesn't work on my '95. Was thinking of an upgrade, plus newer cluster would look better.

 

OK! So over the last week I took my dash out of my '93 Ranger so i can replace the heater core. All of that was no big deal. Now I have a problem with my gauges not work. The only thing that does work is the speedometer. Has anyone else came up with this problem. If so what did you do to fix it and how?

 

Does the dash harness have a ground wire, is it connected.

If all worked when you took it apart and you replaced it as you removed it, then all should work.

Since the gauges are electrical I am thinking a wire isn't connected, re check all connections
