Memorial Day Weekend (May 22-25) - Baja Trip

Who would be down for a camping/wheelin'/surfing trip down in baja?

There are a few surf camps and an offroading camp just 30 south of the TJ border (just past Rosarito).

Camping, drinking, grilling, Puerto Nuevo lobster, bonfires, fireworks, surfing, wheelin' (trucks & bikes) in the dunes & on the beach, etc...

i've been driving down there my whole life about every other week and even lived down there for 4 years... never had a vehicle related problem down there, but countless up here. so it really isn't bad. plus to the spots, all you have to do is cross the border, make 3 merges, then a straight shot down the well-maintained toll-road.

also, all major insurance companies (AAA, Allstate, Famers, etc...) have free-standard coverage approx. 100 miles into mexico. or, full coverage mexico auto insurance (covers theft, collision, vandalism, injury, & private property) can be purchased for about $10-$15/day on a vehicle valued at $20,000.

I just came back from El Golfo like 2 weeks ago. It was a great time. I love driving my truck on the beach.

i think he's more referring to the current state of affairs in the border towns. the struggle for power among drug lords & such. i have family in tijuana and i'm still not going down there for a while.

actually i was just referring to driving. Ranger mentioned how he doesn't like bringing his truck down there. most people think it is crazy driving down there, but it is a quick easy and safe trip.

about what you are talking about, well that's not bad either. i too have family in TJ and im down there every other weekend and yet to have any problems. it's all just how you handle yourself down there and knowing where and where not to go!

yeah, they only look for easy targets: people in nice cars that are alone and look like tourists. going on a weekend baja trip in a caravan of trucks won't be a target they are after!!!

I would love to go but I don't have a passport. I use to get through the border by showing my license and b.c. But it's not possible anymore.

you can still cross that way... i did last weekend. the passport rule doesn't go in effect until 01JUN2009.

I copied this right off of the offical CBP (Customs & Border Protection) website: http://www.cbp.gov/

On June 1, 2009 all U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 16 and older traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), will be required to present a valid passport or other alternative documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 15 years old or younger will still be allowed to travel with just a copy of their birth certificate, as will teens between the age of 16-18 if they are part of an adult supervised school, religious, cultural or athletic group.

Direct Link: http://help.cbp.gov/cgi-bin/customs....i=&p_topview=1

so, memorial day weekend is the last weekend for people without a passport to take advantage of a fun baja trip!!!

just had another fun a$$ worry-free weekend in mexico. went down to my brother-in-laws range just past the tecate mountains off the old route towards ensenada. my brother-in-law put on a sand drags event. all kinds of trucks from ranger class to big rigs. offical drag racing on a dirt strip, beer gardens, food, bands, and of course senoritas! definitely fun and well plannned trip. the next and bigger event is going to be mid may.

anyway, the option of memorial day weekend camping/offroading trip on the beach (just past rosarito) is still open for takers!
