Central Canada Ranger Project

Bought a fairly decent 94 Ranger 4x4 with shift on the fly with a blown automatic - leaky front seal. For the price of a rebuild kit found a 92 Ranger 4.0 engine 4x4 with the 5 speed trans.

Spent most of the day preparing the 92 replacing flat tires fighting aluminum rims and lastly one rounded wheel nut, taking my inverter and drill to drill that stud out.

The donor gives me everything needed for a clean swap both trucks have manual hubs installed.

Also have a Kubota V2203 Direct Injected engine from a reefer that I managed to get the proper oil pan for from the manufacture of Thomas Skid Steers in eastern Canada they had a used pan.

This evening a buddy on Vancouver Island gave me a choice ( free ) of two diesel trucks, one is an 82 Toyota regular cab two wheel drive and the other is a Nissan extended cab two wheel drive. Both trucks run but have plenty of ventilation aka rust and have been parked for years and are now probably overgrown with blackberry vines.

The Toy was given to him with a blown engine, John found a replacement years ago but kept the old engine for parts the trip would be worth while as he also last year gave me a Lister two cylinder liquid cooled engine with a 5 kva generator.

I have a Lister with the SR2 coupled to a 6.5 kva generator that I picked up for $100.00 and a day trip, everything you purchase here in Manitoba ends up being a day trip.

Last years project was to restore an old Allis Chalmers 720 large frame garden tractor and made trips as far as Alberta for Onan parts just so that the tractor would be period perfect.

I'm going to be 70 this year and still like the time spent in my man cave, it's Ranger time.

Towing the 92 ranger donor home via back roads found an abandoned 92 Nissan Pathfinder, V6 auto manual shift transfer, who made the case for Nissan.

What's the laws up there for claiming an abandoned vehicle?

Possession 9/10th ownership, owner of the property where vehicle was abandoned has to apply to the motor vehicle branch for a new certificate of ownership in order to plate and insure.

Easier to just purchase as I did with the donor Ranger.

If your assembling a vehicle from various donors that you want to register you have to produce all the bills of sales for each part purchased.

Its a Nissan transfer case, they made it, 1986 to 1997 is the D21 Nissan Hardbody Pickup transfer case

Old TOP on dash ( temp operation permit ) looks like the Nissan never made it to its new destination, been there awhile the tires are weather checked but this could have happened beforehand.

Started to dissemble the 92 Ranger donor for the standard transmission transplant, two questions.

1. How do you remove the knob on the 4x4 manual shift.
2. Found a lot of electronics under the dash with out any part numbers and another on the rad support passenger side just says Motorcraft which is the best shop manual to get that would help identify these unmarked parts.

RonD 05-21-2019 09:12 PM

Ford knobs are heated and put on the shifter, so heat them up and put a wrench under it and tap it up and off

EVTM(electric vacuum troubleshooting manual) is best, they are year and model specific

Ford sends these out every year for the new models, its part of a shop manual set but sold separately

In 1992 there won't be much electronics

The part on the rad support might be EDIS-6 module, spark controller

Could be DRL(daylight running headlights) module, has fins on it

Thanks, that helps a lot, the EDIS-6 spark controller is on the passenger side the other finned module is on drivers side of rad support.

DRL module often looks like this: https://images.thewrenchmonkey.ca/cd...007_medium.jpg

This vacuum line from the brake pedal (92 Ranger ) appears to have been disconnected, what does this line connect to and its purpose. Will it be required on the 94 standard swap.

RonD 05-22-2019 09:14 AM

Vacuum line on brake pedal is a backup safety feature for cruise control, it releases vacuum from cruise actuator in engine bay when brake pedal is depressed
Brake light voltage should turn off cruise, electrically, so this was just a backup safety feature

The majority of the plug ins are easy to figure out the one that has me puzzled plug in at speedometer cable drive gear.

Swapping out an automatic with shift (4x4) on the fly 94 Ranger, I read on the forum that both it and the manual case are similar. With the manual shift what else should I be keeping from the donor besides a list put up from another member.

RonD 05-22-2019 02:02 PM

In the late 1980's Ford added a VSS(vehicle speed sensor) to the speedometer cable unit on the transmission or transfer case, this was for automatic transmission use, i.e. computer shifting or torque converter lock up, and for Cruise control, was also used for 4WD electric shift to 4Low, Speed much be 0mph to shift into 4low

In 1995 all Rangers got electric speedometer/odometer, so no more speedo cable just the VSS, in 1998 speedo drive was removed from trans and transfer cases, and Rear Axle ABS sensor was used for speed

On the manual transfer case there is a TWO WIRE plug in next to shift linkage, you can see it in the picture.
Its not required to be hooked up, but is nice to have.
Its the 4high, 4low, indicator switch
When transfer case is in 2WD or Neutral neither of the two wires will be grounded
When in 4high one wire will be grounded
in 4low the other wire will be grounded

On the dash is 4high and 4low indicator lights, these bulbs BOTH get 12volts with key on, but are not grounded.............................so, 4x4 module grounds them when it shifts transfer case to 4high or 4low.

Thats what that switch on the manual transfer case is for, indicator light on dash

The Ranger I'm fixing up is a 94, just ordered the EVTM for 93 Ranger, hopefully not to many changes were made the following year.

They are almost the same as far as I know, you can used 1993 computer in 1994 and visa versa, assuming same engine size of course, lol

How about using 92 computer in the 94 Ranger both have the 4L engine.

Any idea what this might be, located behind the jump seat drivers side 94 Ranger, united technologies automotive

Mystery solved, Electric shift actuator for vehicle transfer case

RonD 05-23-2019 08:06 AM

Wiring may be a little different in 1992, its a different generation Ranger, smaller size as well
1983 to 1992 was Gen 1
1993 to 1997 was Gen 2
1998 to 2011 was Gen 3

1993 to 2011 are the same size so most parts interchange, "most"

1985 to 1994 used the 60-wire EEC-IV computer for fuel injection and a separate spark module, TFI or EDIS

In 1995 Rangers got the 104-wire EEC-V computer with integrated spark system, still used by Ford today

Heat from the sun was enough to get the knob off, but it also looks like Ford possibly made a tool that fits onto that spiral once the tool was in place making contact with the bottom of the knob a quick twist of the tool would lift it off.

That is on a 92 t-case shift not sure if Ford continued adding this in later years.

Thanks for the heads up on the EVTM mine arrived this afternoon. its loaded with information not listed in the shop manual.

Had to purchase a 12 point 13mm combination wrench for the drive-line ( Westward ) and I've twisted in into a pretzel, what the heck did Ford use permanent thread locker on everything.

RonD 05-27-2019 09:11 PM

I don't think Ford can take credit for Rust, lol.

manitobaranger 05-27-2019 09:21 PM

Do you by chance know the socket size needed for the front u-joint, from what I can see the bolt can accept wither a torx or a 12 point. All my sockets are 6 point so I'll have to buy the correct one for the job and do not want to get a full set.

If your combination wrenches are 12 point (most are) you can figure out the size that way.
