Long Time Lurker - Introduction and advice FX4-LV2

Hello All,

Long time visitor to the board, finally signing up to introduce myself. Wasn't really sure how best to post, so I thought I would fill it up on this page and keep it simple. I know there are magicians/technicians on here/out there. (Thank you all in advance)

Bought it used and owned my 2002 for 7 yrs now. 30th BDay present to myself. It is an FX4Level II manual/manual and I added a matching Leer canopy and custom aluminum racks. (no rattling!) I installed a K&N cold air intake, and add-a-leaf spring kit in the rear. Also added ProComp shocks, but they are getting rusty now after 5 yrs of Canadian winters! Same stock 15x7 alcoa's with 31x10 BFG's

My ranger has been all over Canada (Van.Island - PEI). Used hard, cared for and now I have a house and want to spend the summer 'exploring' her. Sorry, couldn't resist.

She has a 2003 engine. Let me tell you a story of an pesky oil filter O-ring...
Never had a single problem. 200kms on body, 100kms on engine.
My summer will attempt to clean/repair/upgrade whatever is needed or broken, or if I can afford to add some bling...
Now...
two weeks ago I seafoamed the intake manifold via the brake booster (used new hose with funnel) and added seafoam to my gastank(same hose funnel). I did not add seafoam to my engine as I want to wait to get closer to my next regular oil change (only 2000km from last oil change). I have pennzoil syn 5w30 ready and waiting...
And I also used prestone rad flush and flushed out my rad/heater core.
Good news- truck seems to run smoother.
Bad news- I got a check engine light. First time ever. (except for pesky o-ring incident) and I took it to my local guy who helped with the '03 engine. He gets back to me and says problem with the EGR. Code says DPFE. That cost me $100. The dang DPFE was another $80

Replaced it myself, re-connected the battery, drove around the block, engine light comes ON again. Bah.
I am attempting to find a leak, possibly a loose wire? Any suggestions?

I figure I will buy an OBD2 for myself. Anybody have one they love? Recommend a brand/model or place to go? I live in Sask, Canada. WHat about online?

Anyway, I finally have a backyard to play in. Canadian winters are brutal and SK is probably like arctic. Rust is ever-present so I want to use my summer to take it apart a bit as far as suspension and exhaust. Anyone ever removed the a/c before? Pretty sure I will need a pully.

Would be happy to hear tips or advice, suggestions, whatever.
Board has been bery bery good to me...
Thank you.

Welcome to RF!

Have you had somebody read the codes for you?

Look up a product called POR-15

Just to clarify, POR-15 is for the rust, to treat it.

Here's a cheap scan gauge a lot of us bought as a deal like 2 years ago for 40$

X2 on this. They now also support metric. So you can run in Kms instead of miles. I still need to send mine in for upgrade. I have been happy with mine and it reads codes.

Never got a look at the codes.
I figure I'll invest the $$ and know for myself.

So, I checked that Ultra Gauge place...
I just purchased their EM series w/out the windshield bracket mount. Ships to my door for $125 CAN. Not bad I think.
Seems like a good product!
Thanks for the tip.
Love this forum!
Many thanks!

The windshield bracket is strong. I haven't had to remove mine and the suction cup hasn't come off either. You're gonna like it.

So I got my Ultra-Gauge in the mail today. Sweet!
Plugged it in and it spit out trouble code at me! P1400
So, it still says I am getting low voltage to the DPFE. The dang thing is brand new.
So, I cleaned the terminals of the electrical plug-in and the only wires are two little ones that run into a whole other set of cables that are all connected/re-routed with the rest of the electrical components of the EEC/EGR whatever.
So, any ideas? Or should I just clear the code?
Thanks again

May as well... clear it and if it comes back you'll have to look into it further.

So, of course, it comes back on again.
Even after I cleared it, the Ultra-Gauge triggered the 'pending trouble' alarm. I love this UG!
So, it says TC1 = P1400
And all I can find for that code is 'low voltage DPFE'. Unless someone has a better guess for the code?
Anyway, truck is running okay, but I do not want to take it on a long trip.
Never had a problem until now. Still have my orig DPFE, dealer in town has one for $90.
I am a bit stumped.
