Engine pinging

My name is Carroll and I am a new member. I have a 1993 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab 4X4 with the 4 liter V6. I do most of the repairs on my truck myself. The Ranger is still the best looking truck on the road, BUT........

My biggest concern now is the engine pinging when I accelerate even on level ground.
The '93 model does not have a knock sensor. Higher octane gas helps but does not eliminate the pinging. I have replaced the vacuum connections and the computer board was replaced once. I am sure that others have had the same problem and would like to know what they have done.
