Hello everyone my name is Ted but people call me Shaggy. I'm new here to the forums, but I have always been into modding my Ranger. I really want to go to a bucket style leather seat instead of my cloth 60/40, and from the little bit of research I have done, I think the 95-01 Ford Explorer bucket leathers will bolt right in? And thats not the only problem I think I may run into, im thinking about the seat belt light and seat belt chime, will that be plug to go with the Explorer seats? Please help as I really want some more comfort and some leather. I have a 2003 Ranger Xtra Cab if that be of any assistance.

From what I have seen the Seat exploding mechanism will bolt on with slight mod’g.
I think you need to open up a hole in the seat track.

I used Ranger Cloth Buckets so everything just swapped over, bolt on setup.

Just remember, Explorer Seat almost bolt in to the Ranger Ext Cab but no the Ranger Std Cab.

 

welcome! yes, the explorer seats will bolt in. you will have to use your ranger seat belt. be sure to use the search bar to find more info. it's covered a lot on here.

One more thing I like to mention.
You have an 03 Ext Cab, mine is an 03 Std Cab but I believe your tracks will unbolt from your seats… (I used bucket seats that were in a 99 Ext Cab, unbolted my seat tracks, bolted them on the ext cab buckets and in they went).
Now this is not leather seats but if you find two of the 60/40 seat setups that match, (or you might be willing to recover) you can use the 40% parts and have two buckets. The Bucket Seat part of the 60/40 is a std bucket seat and can be used on either side by swapping the track system.
Just something to think about !

 

Thanks for the suggestion of the two passenger buckets, but I'm not eager to do that. I am really wanting leather and a power drivers side with lumbar support. And if I did the two passenger side buckets wouldn't the recline be on the wrong side of the drivers seat? Just thinking.

 

this a common question when this comes up! no, the recline handle won't be on the wrong side because you will not be using the passenger side recline assembly. only the bottom metal pan, foam, and the cover. you will however have a small hole on the inside of the driver's seat where the passenger recline handle used to be.

 

Oh Wow wouldn't have thought of doing that, but I still want leather power seats so I'm not thinking of the two 40% seats but thank you for the help. Any idea on the general prices of two leather explorer power seats?

As drppdyllwrngr stated, the reclining lever will be on the correct side.
There are holes on both side of each seat pan and all of the levers and mechanisms fit.

As far as seat pricing goes… if I had a set FS I would ask $150 to $200 for seats in really good condition but since most are not in really good condition $100 - $150 would probably work for most seats.
Usually both Seats in 4 door Explorers are powered in Explorer Sport’s the Driver’s side is the only powered unit and I am not sure of the Sport Trac but they have really nice seats and if you get a chance to get them I would but I have heard they go for a lot more.
You can find some on eBay but usually more money than going to the JY yourself.

Not Seat Info: A little additional info, if you find a Sport Trac or an Explorer Sport (2 door) they have nice consoles, nice seats and usually white gauges and some silver trim pieces.
Check it all out, might be worth getting all of the interior parts that unbolt and resell them on this site.
Even the Mirrors may have Puddle Lights, get the whole mirror and all of the wiring you can and maybe even a sw or two.
Also, some of the Explorer Sports have Pioneer CD6 Players, the CD6 Units are IMO the same as a std CD6 but the speakers in the front doors are components units, a Tweeter and Mid Range and the rear or side speakers are suppose to good to but to me they are just the same.

 

Oh Yeah another vital question for me is, will I throw any codes when I swap my seats? My concern is what will I do with the electrical that runs to the seats for some sensors or something?

 

you will have to reuse your seat belts and pretensioners. that should be the only wiring on the seats.

 

Not if you re-hook up the Pretensioners (seat belt stuff) before turning the key.

Your truck is an ’03, put the seats in, attach the Pretensioners and hook up the wiring for them, then do the seat power hook up.
When you go get the seats, take a battery pack with you and get the wire colot code and check the power units before paying for them.

Wiring:
Seat Motors -
BK/WH - Power
Blk - Ground

In the vehicle - 25A fuse with 12 ga wire, split for both seats; fuse as close to the battery as possible.

 

Thanks So much for the battery pack suggestion, I would have bought seats without even checking the power mechanisms lol. But this may seem like a dumb question but what is a seat belt pretensioner? And what if I just ran power from one of my 12 volt plugs? Is there a fuse under the hood for that? And are the wires for the pretensioners plug and go?

Pretensioners are part of the Air Bag Restraint System, if you hit something and the air bag goes off these things explode and tighten the seat belts.
On my 03 EDGE it was plug and play, You will see when you do it, not a biggy.

I believe the seat system calls for a 15 amp circuit and the power ports are rated at 10A MAX, so IMO… No !
There are two ways to do this in my book and I like to do things a little better the first time around that way there should be no problems later on down the trail or on the road.
1) Find the Fuse Location in the main Power Panel and wire it up to work using the proper sized fuse and wire. Not sure what the OEM Fuse is but if the circuit calls for 15 amps then use at a minimum 14 gauge wire, 12 better and not household type wire.

2) Run a fused power wire from the battery.

Why try to make do when there are defined methods that work.
