Howdy folks. I just picked up my '98 Ranger yesterday. It's got 170k and has been mechanic-maintained for the last ~80k, runs like a top. It's a bone-stock base model.

Anyways, the only thing it needs is rotors up front. One of the how-to's I came across online mentions that threadlock is used to secure the bolts that attach the calipers. How necessary is this? As you may have noticed, I'm far from an experienced mechanic, but one has to start somewhere. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure how necessary it really is, but I do it every time.

If the OP is talking about the caliper brackets , then YES use thread locker.Every time you remove them.
There were pics posted on this forum a couple years ago of what happens if one of those bolts falls out.
A very dangerous condition that will cause a wreck.

I did it with mine. Better safe then sorry. Especially at 60....

Thanks for the advice y'all. I may end up just taking it to a brake shop to have the rotors turned if they look reasonably unworn when I take a look later today. Hopefully it isn't calipers!
