New Ranger owner from Michigan

My names Nate and I just bought a 2003 FX4 Level 1.

I'm from Michigan... I've always had jeeps.

I one bad thing about my truck.

-it has a weird clunk or slip and take off and when I'm stopping. It doesn't make a noise, I just feel a clunk when i take off and after the truck settles at a stop. I'm thinking U-joint or something in the rear end.

Anybody ever heard of that?

Welcome, another Michigan guy here. Kent city isnt far from me. As for the clunk its either a U-joint or the slip joint. There is a TSB out about the slip joint, they need to be repacked with grease from time to time or they clunk.

Yeah Muskegon is basically right down apple ave. I actually just read about the slip joint too. I guess the splines get sticky and create the same type of symptom that i have.

Yep, thats exactly it. They stick and then slip and it feels like a clunk. Ford sells a special grease for it but I just used a good high pressure grease, it fixed mine right up.

Welcome to RF!

Nice looking truck. How is your truck comparing to the jeeps?

Well I will say, while small inside, its still roomier than my 2001 Wrangler.
I don't think there is a comparison when it comes to offroading... To be honest if I wanted an offroad rig I would have kept my jeep. But when it comes to versatility, the ranger far exceeds the capabilities of my jeep. By that i mean, I couldn't put two dirt bikes or 4 kayaks in the back of my jeep. It still rides like a truck but it has better street manors than my jeep. I bought this truck because i have a few friends with them. They use them as work trucks, and they have always been good to them.

I see your a VW guy. I also had a few VW's in my younger years. Two slammed VR6 jettas, a 87 Scirocco 16v, 87 jetta 16v and a 1990 jetta wolf. Pretty cool cars.

I have had this problem - it was the slip joint on the drive shaft - needed to be greased. Unfortunately there is no zerk fitting so I had to drop the drive shaft. I thought U joints or suspension loading/unloading, took a very long time to realize it was the drive shaft. Good luck and welcome to the forums

Awesome!

I recently got into vw's a tear or two ago. I own 2, and I'm still learning a lot about them.

Do you still have any parts? Lol.

Yeah they are fun cars. Their aren't many cars that sound like a VR6.

Unfortunately I sold all of my parts and stuff.
