Howdy from Northern Minnesota.
I just bought a 2000 Ranger XLT, 4.0, Manual, 4x4. Overall the truck seems tight. Initial inspection showed a loose #4 sparkplug causing a misfire w matching check engine light. The CEL was also triggered by the code for a new O2 sensor. Both items being fixed as I write this.
Little projects to fix include a frozen tailgate lock, non-functioning side mirror adjust motors. One of the previous owners installed a Hurst shift kit with an auxiliary oil pressure gage down by the shift boot. The two gages on the right of the inst. panel are non-functioning as well. Not sure if they were disconnected when the oil pressure gage was installed or just quit working.
That's it for now. If any readers have thoughts on the issues listed above, I would love to hear them.

Yes, oil pressure gauge in dash was probably disconnected if a "real oil pressure " gauge was added
In the late 1980's Ford change to an oil pressure switch on the engine, so the Gauge was either On or Off, didn't show actual oil pressure, if pressure was above 5psi gauge showed "normal" under 5psi gauge showed 0
Other gauge on the Right is System Voltage, it should still be working its just connected to 12volt power in instrument cluster, fuse #11 in cab fuse box, 7.5amp
2000 Ranger was the last year of the 4.0l OHV engine, used from 1990 to 2000 it was a very reliable engine, but do NOT over heat it, pull over if it starts to over heat
The 4.0l OHV heads have a weak spot in the casting between valve seats and the heads WILL crack if over heated, not "may crack", WILL CRACK, so save some money if a hose breaks or water pump leaks, PULL OVER, do not try to "make it home", let it cool down
2001, and up, Rangers got the 4.0l SOHC engines which had timing chain issue until 2004/5
So if you google Ranger 4.0l you will get mixed info because there were TWO 4.0l engine used in Rangers
2000 Ranger 4x4 may or may not have PVH(Pulse Vacuum) front hubs, many 4.0ls came with Live Axle in 2000 which are always locked, the PVH system was first used in 1998 and Ford had issues with it almost immediately so they started swapping to Live axle in mid-1999
PVH hubs can be removed and manual hubs installed in their place
