Super charge the 3.0? or 4.0 swap and then super charge?

How goes everyone? New to the forums here, not new to rangers though. I come in search of information, wisdom, and guidance. I have recently purchased my third ranger during my time on this rock and as much fun as they are I have the intense urge to do more this time around. I owned an 88 XLT with a body lift, tires and some other minor upgrades. Ive also owned a 2003 Ranger Edge and slapped a few upgrades on as well. This time around it came in the form of a 2004 Reg cab 5 speed 3.0 4x2. Its clean, has nice paint, smells like crap.
Now brushing aside the time, money, resources and physical pain, I have come to the split decision of either supercharging this 3.0 which has 131k miles on it or swapping in the 4.0 and then supercharging it. Either way I want it to look stock in that engine bay and I want it to be clean. I need more power in this little truck and what better way then to supercharge? No seriously, I'm stuck here. what would be best? what would be the most reliable? what would be the most fun? Im not looking to go full race truck. Ill still be driving this puppy around town, grabbing groceries, embarrassing the locals. If i can get away with slapping some power onto this 3.0 Great! otherwise it'll be a 4.0. not a 5.0 not an LS. remember I want this thing to look as close to stock when popping open that hood. Anywho Ive taken up entirely too much time. Thank you in advance for any and all feedback!

I would ask these guys.

Tom Morana Racing Engines

My opinion, even at 2 or 3 pounds boost, I think you're going to have to beef up the bottom end and use metal head gaskets _ and stronger head bolts.

Welcome to the forum

Well it will NOT look stock when you open the hood, supercharger is pretty tough to hide

You want to add boost to a low compression engine, 3.0l is kinda low at 9.3:1, 4.0l OHV(pre-2001) is 9.0:1
You would get more "bang for your buck" with 4.0l OHV because of displacement and compression ratio.

But swapping engines to get a 4.0l would be money badly spent

You can get intakes and superchargers for either, and inner cooler, really really need that
And all the plumbing will be visible with hood open

You want clean and power then explorer V8 swap is what you want
There is "NO REPLACEMENT for displacement"

The best 3.0l or 4.0l supercharged is still not as good as the worst 5.0l stock
Not an opinion, laws of physics at work here.

If you were racing in a limited displacement class, i.e. max 3,000cc, or 4,000cc then yes, Boost either, if allowed
But you said you are not.

RonD yes of course it wont be entirely stock but a quick glance from someone who doesnt exactly know these kinds of things. Im just not the flashy kind of person if you know what I mean. Now if it wasnt for the absolute horrible gas milage Id be getting from a super charged explorer V8 I would be contemplating that as well. Its just something about the sound of the smaller V6 motors with the wine of a charger that gets my attention. Sure theres no replacement for displacement but when you are the underdog and you can still embarrass the V8 guys, thats what Im looking at. Again im not gonna be racing this little one in anything "official". Im just thinking should I even bother with the 3.0 knowing its age, or build a 4.0 on the side. Anywho I appreciate the welcome and the response. Im leaning towards I may need to start looking for a donor 4.0.

What all is so different between the 3.0l and the 4.0l? Obviously its got 1l more, but which is more reliable with these kinds of mods? Whos got the stronger bottom end? Which one has a better set of heads? Tossingon a super charger sounds all kinds of fun but I do understand the prereq's to keep em running longer then a few days. I.e. stronger head studs, gaskets, bigger injectors....

No difference on which one can take more boost pressure, you only know that limit when you cross it and something breaks

Problem with boost is that once you have some you want just a little more, so something will break, just the nature of the "power beast"

Since you already have the 3.0l then that would be where to start
And Rebuilding any engine doesn't guaranty no problems, you can watch any type of race and see blown engines, and these are $20,000+ engines that are gone in 2 RPMs

Thats just the road you are going down, and eyes wide open
Even stock engines break, so no safety there, lol

Bottom line, you build what you want and fix it when it breaks, no complaints, and no IF it breaks thats a WHEN, lol.
If you have a vehicle that goes 100MPH then you want to go 105MPH, then 110MPH, then.......ect
And thats the bug
You want "safe" engine modifications, try glittered radiator cap, other than that it's just a matter of time until something breaks

And just for the record, no one with a V8 would ever be embarrassed to be beat by a smaller engine, they let you win, because they have a V8 and nothing to prove, lol.

Here we go ! You'll have to cut a hole in your hood and you won't be able to see anything though.
