4.6 3V in Ranger / Courier (Inputs?)

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site. I have been a mechanic for years with a few swaps under the belt. For years, I have been a 50/50 Chevy Ford guy (yes, the battle within continues). I have done the V8 S10 swaps with one being a TPI using all stock components. I drove it for a few years but not much room in the cab. Also had to partially sacrifice a/c by cutting down the a/c box. Any-who, I have a stock, 03 Mustang GT with the 5 speed manual that ended up sitting and now car needs everything the Florida sun destroys. The car ran great when parked but now needs a fuel pump to make it run (along with paint, tires, etc..). My thoughts are to do a transplant into either a Ranger or Old Courier. I have yet to purchase the truck so any inputs and books to follow would be great to get before I purchase. I would like to put an automatic trans behind the engine and thought about a 700R w/adapter plate (haven't looked yet to see if they make). I would like more room and a/c but also want it to look like a factory install when I'm done. Thanks for any inputs in advance.

I didnt see an adapter plate for using a 700R. While I'm awaiting more info from Advanced Adapters, is there a Ford AOD that doesn't require much to install?

2003 Mustang GT should be 2v, 2005 was first 3v in Mustangs, the 1999–2004 GT did have the better heads

The AOD is a good choice for V8 swap, no computer needed, like the 700R4, but won't match up with 2003 4.6l bolt pattern

The first two 4.6l castings in the early 1990s(1990–1993), did use Windsor small block pattern, same as 5.0l OHV

There is a Ford Modular to 700R4 adapter here: https://www.transdepot.net/Ford-Modu...ter_p_755.html

A 1998-2003 Ranger would be best platform, it used higher pressure fuel system, 55psi
Although 1993 to 1997 will work, 1992 and earlier were slightly smaller bodies
2004 and up used HEC dash and CAN Bus setup

Maybe I should go with an 02-03 Ranger then. When I did my S10 TPI swap, There were a lot of wires that were the same color code and sensors were more interchange friendly. Maybe this will be so with the 4.6 swap. I also read about the bolt patterns on the mod motors being different like you explained. I already have a 700R but would it be worth going and getting an AOD instead and if so, what should I grab one from? I did think about having the 5 speed but I did have to stop driving the Mustang because of my nerve damage in my ankle during rush hour traffic. I actually want to use this as a daily driver and enjoy the truck. If I repeat the same measures as the Mustang, it wouldn't be worth me doing the swap. Just curious, if I got the 02-03 Ranger with an automatic, should I look for a specific engine / tranny combo that would have a transmission the would bolt up to the mod motor already with little modification (or a specific year Ranger I should look for)? I know my 02 Explorer with the automatic is on its 4th transmission.I don't want to repeat that either.

I didn't see any AOD adapters for mounting these to the modular V8s, but.....................................

AOD did get some solenoid control in 1992 and Ford renamed it the AODE, you don't want one of these BUT what about the bellhousing from an AODE should fit AOD, not sure but worth a look
Not sure if the 4R70W bellhousing fits the AOD, but it was the full solenoid version of the AOD

1991 to 1993 Modular V8 would have the Windsor bolt pattern so won't work, you would need bellhousing from 1994 and up AODE/4R70W using 4.6l V8
