I've been thinking about a 4x4 conversion, need some opinions and thoughts!

Deffientley sweet if you feel it would help you out! Ive also always though if i had a 2wd and doing a 2wd conversion while i was there id just go a head and do a SAS.

Look up 0RangerEdge2... Tyler did the swap about a year ago. Turned out awesome and kept the cost down for the most part.

I don't think you'll be able to do it as easliy as him though. The 2wd Edge frame is the same as a 4wd 01+ truck... Meaning it runs torsion bars. You're coil sprung, and unless you have a 2wd trailhead (98-00) You won't be able to do the swap very easily at all, the more I think about it. Better off selling it and buying a 4wd and go from there.

 

What makes the 98-00 better for the swap?

its a fun thing to think about but actually attempting it is quite an experience. ill can tell you for the transmission conversion stage, the new parts required to get the driveline to shift from 2 to 4 wd will cost around $2000 unless you have better sources for parts then i did.

manual t case $400
rebuild kit $160
shifter $150
output shaft/pan/filter/seals/hardware/ new clutches and rebuild components for trans
> $600
extension housing $70
4x4 rear driveshaft $100
labour to rebuild the trans and instal output shaft (7hours) @ $95/hr

 

for the rest of the conversion, if the goal is to lift the truck more effeciently then plan on a solid front swap for sure, the stock driveline just isnt ideal to keep cranking it up or using drop crossmembers,

 

ouch, yeah that puts it in perspective, im better off buying a 4x4..

Well I used a junkyard to get most of my parts. I paid $100 for the manual t-case, $500 for a used 4x4 transmission (88k miles), $50 for the shifter linkage, and well the driveshaft was a freebie. I paid $100 for all the front end components (knuckles, CV shafts and front differential). That would be the majority of the cost for most people but I scored a major deal. Granted those prices aren't the total cost of the project as there are odds and ends needed all over the place but yeah.

With a 2wd coilspring truck I wouldn't waste your time if you want it "factory". You always have the option of a solid axle swap but that's really getting into things.

 

That's why I said unless his truck was a 98-00 Trailhead truck which I think only came in 4wd, it makes no sense to try and swap to 4wd components.

I was thinking of doing something similar to my 2002 tremor. Maybe find a wrecked or repo 4x4 ranger. Will an explorer or a mountaineer work also? I'm new to the rangers and trying to learn. Would be sweet to do the v8 swap in the posses. Just an idea.

 

do you have the edge package on your truck?

 

Not sure. I was told it has the edge package from a friend who is big into the rangers out here. He told me it had different front spindles and 2" blocks on the rear springs.

 

in all honesty..just sell it and buy a 4X4. i could't find one within my price range when i first started looking for one so i ended up with a 2wd. i guess the second easiest thing to do would just buy a frame and drivetrain and drop your engine and body onto it. imo its just too much of a hassle to do a 4wd conversion. the way i see it a 4wd is a 2wd 95% of the time. I live up north, in the mountains, on a backroad to nowhere, where we get a ton of snow, and honestly, i throw some weight in the bed come winter and ive never had a problem getting around.
then again..4wd is like a condom..most of your life you dont need one..but when the tine comes, your gonna be glad you had it. its up to you..me? i'm raw doggin it

yeah man what year do you have? or better yet whats your front suspension? its realllllll easy to make it look like a 4X4..really just a leveling kit thats all you need..me? im goin bigger lol 4 inch lift going in friday!!

That's the way I feel about lifting a 2 wheel drive. I do like the look. I have new keys for the torsion bars to lift it 2" to 3" and I need to re-arch my springs because one of them is sagging. Might have them give me an extra inch why they are at it. I do want the extra spring rate for hauling more crap in the bed.

I say go for it. Or just lift your 2wd. I beat the **** out of my 2wd and I only got stuck a handful of times. If you like mud then it will be fine, but if you like rocks it probably won't do so well.
