4.0 SOHC engine cover (pics)

Give me some feedback. The manufacturer makes them for the new v6 and v8 mustangs. They sent me one to check fitment on the 4.0 Ranger. It's gonna take some reworking to make it fit our trucks. I know it's not for everyone, but is it worth pursuing? The sell for about $135. They can be painted and they have room for a decal on the front as pictured.

It definatley needs painting to match. If a guy likes to pop the hood and show off the engine bay I see it as a pretty neat mod. I can see where offroaders would gain no benefit.

It seems out of place..like it doesn't belong there. Kinda boxy looking and not a smooth transition into the rest of the engine.

here it is on a v6 stang for reference. It really looks like mine needs to go down an inch or more. That may be why it looks a little off.

It looks out of place on the truck, but looks good on the Mustang.

is it stamped sheet metal or molded plastic?

regardless, the $135 price tag is absolutely insane. The only way to get away with charging that is if they painted to match and it came with a billet chrome logo like your 4.0 before they were shipped out.

I don't know what your cost would be wayne, but I wouldn't partake personally. The boxiness doesn't fit the body style of any ranger 93+ so it looks out of place. Now the cover idea isn't a bad one, but something a little more Ranger and a little less price tag would be more appropriate.

my two cents

Thanks Andy. I have to work on the price but that is what i am seeing from everyone selling it for a mustang. We haven't got that far in the discussions. Right now it's "let's see if it fits, then go from there". The chrome 4.0 emblem does come with it. They sell them in two finishes, silver or black. I don't think it will fit anything but the 2001+ 4.0's, so that puts some limits on it.

You get into the bagged/lowered Rangers and it would be a hit. The problem is most of those are either pre 2001 or not a 4.0.

looks like it's gonna be too much to make it work (correctly). But, here's the latest of what I'm up to with the sample piece. I had to cut the front off more to allow it to seat all the way down. This causes more of the problem Jason was talking about.

so I whacked the front off and I'm gonna graft the stock cover onto it. It will ttake some imagination, but picture the sonic blue piece with aluminum strips to match the back pices raised edges. With the right grafting, the right paint, and the right billet pieces it could look pretty sharp. I may do this as I get some time. If it don't look good I'll trash it.

I've got the two pieces gluing together overnight so I can remove it as one piece and start transforming it into one solid piece. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I appreciate all the info. With all the cutting and reworking I don't seee this coming to fruition as a production piece. The manufacturer is not gonna retool for such a small number of eligible vehicles.

I have seen quite a few of these at car shows (on v8 new stangs). As far as heat goes, i believe the Viper has a cover on it, not to mention the one-offs by folks like foose.

hoipefully I'll get mine done and have an entry in the "mods noone else has" thread. We'll see.

I think that thing is going to look killer on your truck wayne when you finish it!

A few suggstions for yours:
1) on the sides that hang down, there are some really hard right angles, I think it would look alot better with them rounded out quite a bit.

2) once they are grafted togeter, two tone it with a pinstripe. Colormatched will look fine but TT w/ a seperating pinstripe will really set you above and beyond. and it's not too much more work really
