Fuel Saving chip?

I have a '00 Ranger that I'm going to be putting a new motor in in the next couple of months. I bought it with a knock, thinking that it could go either way as the oil pressure gauge was steady... hah! Pulled it into the mechanic's drive, glanced down at the pressure and tick... tick... tick. Fantastic.

In browsing eBay for Ranger paraphernalia, I ran across this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GAS-S...spagenameZWDVW

Seems like a load of crap to me, but what the heck- I thought I'd see what you all think of it. It's not like I'd be blowing a wad on it. Seems like the extra HP and quicker start times would negate any fuel savings...

Thoughts?

yea that "chip" is complete bs. Did the mechanic figure out whats wrong with ur truck?
and btw our oil pressure gauges arent very good. My engines fine but sometimes it flickers off and on when the engines idling bcuz of a bad oil pressure sending unit but if you have a knock then its probably something worse.

Don't buy it, Jen. You can fool a motor to some extent with simple circuits, but if they are simply modifying the temperature input, or worse trying to scale the O2 sensor readings, it's a bad idea or it may not work.

To do it right, you need different fuel curves in your engine computer. Most of these simple methods may work on older vehicles, but 1998+ Rangers have pretty much tightened control systems that make this difficult.

I wouldn't give these guys your money, lol -- even for that very little.

Just my .02

That's what I figured... heh.

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah- we knew what it was the second the pressure started ticking... rods and ring bearings. It's fried. No big deal- I have a guy out of town who can put a new one in for $1600 and a local guy making calls trying to beat that price. For what I paid, it still comes in way under book. Helps to buy things from yer dad!

Thanks. :D

This is my first truck... I've only ever driven cars... but my Civic, Death's, clutch has started popping so I guess I really need to get the motor in the Ranger. Sigh. Gonna miss that gas mileage!

I'm being stubborn about pulling the box off, so we're going to see if we can get a bed cap stuck on there behind it... and I guess I have to stop driving so fast.

There are some diesel computer chips that considerably increase mpg but they also reduce the engine power.
There is no way you would get that much fuel increase with a gas engine from a chip, especialy a 4.0

Nothing like that yet... but if we do play with height, I'll lift it a little so that I can go and get the horses out of the pasture with a little less worry. Heheh.

The list right now:

New bumpers and grille... a tiny bit of body work (there's one dent I'd like to see gone), new headlights and taillights (my headlights are zip-tied in... think dad did that, heheh), tool box, bed cap... inside it needs seat covers (or I might just replace the seats completely), a new console (bungee'd shut at the moment)... a CD player and new speakers... and new tires and rims.

It's funny that you ask, because my dad JUST called me to ask me what I've done with the truck so far. A whole lotta NOTHIN'... besides put a sticker on it.

It was a company truck... so it's a good thing we're replacing the motor anyway, they probably ran the hell out of it. Here are a couple of pictures from this morning. It's nothing special really, but then I never thought I'd drive a Ranger... and I kinda like it.

If you buy that fuel saving chip, you should also buy the following:

- Tornado intake
- Muffler Bearings
- Blinker Fluid
- Flux Capacitor
- Turbo Chip

I got a better idea. Send me the $8.49. I'll send you a Dorito. Its a win win situation. You get your chip and I get some more cash.
