train horn help
im thinking of putting a horn kit on my 2003 ranger and i know that some of my fellow ranger-forums.com members could help me with a kit to buy looking to spend around 250 maybe 300 on it but just looking at the basics of it and i was wondering could it be hooked up to your old horn switch? if not i can manage but what is a good kit or pick a part?

might want to check on the legal part of using your horn button. Best is a push button, like a starter button, thru a relay to the horn, a good 100% duty cycle air compressor, the air tank can be found under any school bus or big truck. Paint or powder coat. A good system with tank should be able to air up tires, or run a 1/2 inch impact.

I've got mine hooked to my stock horn.
System is comprised of a ViAir 2.5 gallon air tank, ViAir pressure shut off relay, ViAir 15% duty cycle compressor and a horn off a delivery truck.
Tank, compressor, and relay are where the spare tire used to be.
Air lines, and electrical wires are then ran up to the cab/motor bay.
I have a wire spliced into the stock wire that goes to the stock horn, that runs straight to the inline air solenoid. So the stock electrical signal is what opens the solenoid triggers the air horn.
Compressor then comes on at 85PSI (even as low as 50 PSI will run and be plenty loud enough for most horns...but 85-110 is best). Then the compressor shuts off at 110 PSI.
System hardly leaks, about once a month it comes on by itself and charges the air tank for max of 1 min. Even if I use the horn, the compressor hardly ever comes on. The horn itself just doesn't use that much air.
Plus from the system I have quick connects plumbed, and I can fill my tires up from 15PSI to 35PSI in about 20 min.
I'm looking to convert to a ViAir 100% duty cycle compressor later on, to speed up the time it takes to air the tires up, and to run air tools

One can piece together a system for cheaper. But thats just MHO. If cheap isn't the goal go for it....
Although a dedicated buttom in the cab wouldn't be a bad idea, I ran mine to the stock horn button b/c I didn't want to hack my dash panel up to put a switch in.

Not a fan of the air horn thing but if you run it make sure it is what you want.
Test out a Wal-Mart Unit, if not what you were thinking return it… less loss that way.
Chk also on the amount of horn noise allowed in your town… may be surprised to find out OEM only is legal, ticket after ticket.

Kit says max honk time is 5 seconds, that's pathetic. Mine (which I spent about $200) will go 37 seconds before the compressor comes on. In 37 sec it uses 25PSI, and at that point there is still another 60PSI of air left in the tank. Do the math.
