Foam 'pre-filter' for water/mud splash up in stock airbox?
 

Noticed after doin some muddin/splashing around last weekend i had a little bit of water in the stock air box, filter was a little damp as well. Going back to being bored yesterday, I picked up a decent sized lawn mower air filter for $5 from Lowes...Figured what the hell.

Anyway, the idea behind the foam is the water has no straight path into the airbox, it gets lost and falls out, also air can still pass through. I hooked up my xcal to the truck, and under live data..i noticed very little change between my normal air filter + foam vs no filter & foam. (while running i unlatched/lifted the top of the airbox and watched. Now thats not to say it possibly could be slightly restrictive to the engine while at higher rpm, it probably is...a little. It is a pretty good size filter however so its to a minimum in my opinon.

Anyway i'm going to run it next time out for the hell of it and see how it does. Comments? Good, bad, smart, stupid, etc? :E

Heres what i have just in the stock air box, isn't pretty i know..i'll modify the box to be a little more accomidating if it ends up working decent.

Great idea, I think if you got another airbox you could just swap them out before you went out.

True, as far as having another air box, it really just pops in and out. If you go through a lot of dirt/dust in the desert, you could soak the filter in oil, wring it out and it'd catch a lot of that dust as well. They're all cleanable, help prolong your regular filter if thats what you run.

As far as the outerwears, seems like a great idea as well, however it looks to me it is only for aftermarket cone filters. I just run a stock airbox and drop in filter on my truck.

good idea, but dont think thats gonna prevent hydroloc in deep water, its only gonna divert small amounts of water.

I like the idea. Is it secured down in anyway or does it rely on the engine suction to hold it in place?

Just kind of a 'squeeze fit'. The foam wants to return to its full square size, i made the hole smaller than the filter is when its 'relaxed'. I will probably run a little slit around the middle/outside of the foam for the groove of the box to ride in. ...See how it goes.

Yea....usually whenever i wheel, i cover my cone filter with a K&M DRY CHARGER. Now that i'm not running K&M intake, idk what i'll do.

Got the box friendly with the dremel a little more, and slit about 1/4" down the middle of the foam all around

its seated decently, we'll see next time i go out how it does.

Does it still let the truck breathe? reason being...i've never seen that thick of pre-filter before. Is iit just a piece of packing foam?

I just drilled a 3inch hole in the side of my air box the other day then i drilled a few 1 inch ones in the bottom to let water drain out.

The only problem I see is it it were to get soaked, wouldnt it restrict flow to engine even more?

Just stop and ring it out. If its a hot day, stop for a few minutes and let it sit in the sun for a few.

Its a lawn mower air filter, it breaths. :biggthump Now i do understand there is a wee bit of difference between a lawn mower engine and a 3.0, but it seems to have decent enough size to not cause an issue on my truck.

As far as its getting 'soaked', not really a concern for me using this. Its more for splash and keeping water from directly going into the box, it doesnt have a huge sponge effect or anything. Its there for splash, not boggin through a river...it'll work fine for its intended purpose.

you can custom order them from their site. i have thought about it i just haven't gotten around to it.

couldn't you basically just take a pair of panty hose and cover your filter with it? That pre-filter from outterwears appears to be of about the same material.

try it, find out and report back to this thread.

not a bad idea, my thought is wouldnt the air flowing through it pull the water in with it

"not really". Not saying you dont get ANY, but the theory behind filtration is that the water gets more lost in the foam and will drop out. This is for bursts/spray of water, not constant running in. Keeps the "majority" out.
