Gas Tanks
Ok, So I'm commissioning into the AF soon and will be doing lots of driving. (Actual disposable income and lots of places I want to go.) I hve a regular cab truck with the 16.9 gallon fuel tank. To the best of my knowledge the extended cab trucks have a 20/21 gallon tank.
Will this bigger tank fit? And if so what kind of issues would you run into with the bigger tank installed? I'm thinking different sending units or something like that. Thanks as always for all the expertise on this site. |
my extended is 19.5gal and i dont see why it would fit because i dont think that the tank goes under the cab

mines extended and I think its around 19 or 18 gallons. I bet you could buy a fuel cell or two though. are you gonna be driving places where there wont be gas stations for miles....or you just dont feel like stopping as often?

I'm going into Acquisitions at Kirtland, AFB.
Basically I don't feel like stopping for gas/I like the idea of having more fuel when driving through unpopulated areas. |
Is it really worth the trouble to switch gas tanks for an extra 3 gallons? Just keep a gas can or somthing.

I've got a gas can from a 2001 XLT 4x4... it's a 19.5 gal tank if i remember right. If you're interested shoot me a PM.

This is the new idea forum, I had an idea, not sure if it is worth the challenge. But, figure three gallons is another hour of driving, that's a substantial change. Will I ever get around to doing it, if it will fit? That depends on if I can find a gas tank for a reasonable price. If it does fit it is essentially a bolt on mod, just undo the tank straps lower the tank. Then switch out the hardware, and bolt up the new tank.

I would also if it was that simple. Another factor it seems the 2002+ single cab 3.0's will show empty too soon. The gas light's coming on and I may stil have a 1/4 tank. At least is seems that way to me. This essentially gives you a 10-12 gallons and then you are filling up. Several people drive my single cab so it's not as simple as just remembering you still have x miles after the light comes on.

Mount a fuel cell where the spare tire is. True it's harder than throwing a true Ranger gas tank on, but will give you choices on how many gallons you want to hold.

A fuel cell is ideal, if this wasn't my daily driver. My biggest concern with a fuel cell is the durability and shelf life issues. My understanding is that most fuel cells have a shelf life of around 5 years. Also mounting it in the spare tire well will expose it to damages if/when I start to take my truck offroad. There is also the added fabrication which is rather intimidating.

Mine shows empty and the light comes on when I still have at least 4 gallons left in the tank. I hate that.

Yeah I fill up with a quarter left and I only get 190 miles on it. Anybody know what is wrong with the fuel gauge or the sender?

WTF my '02 EDGE tank has held only 17 gallons at the most and that was at least five clicks before i stopped!

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'm trying to avoid the heavy mods to my truck for now. I don't want a fuel cell. I've looked into the tanks that mount where my toolbox is. The only ones i've found are not certidied with DOT to actually carry fuel.

I think they are diesel approved, not gas approved. Then you have issues of hooking up a gas guage, etc. I'm with you, if we could just swap out for the bigger oem one it would be great.

Well you must not have been completely empty. Check your trucks manual to know the fuel capacity for your specific vehicle. I assume you have an ext cab so that should be 19.5 gallons, but there is still a few gal in the tank when the gauge says empty.

um dumb idea but here it is anyway. just get a fuel tank. cheap fuel cell or something and mount it in the bed and send a hose from it down to the stock fuel tank. may have to take out the regular filler neck and just fill it from the tank in the bed. dont know just a quick idea. lol

what about one of these guys custom tanks. you could make it how ever big u wanted. http://www.attatank.com/

or you could buy a programmer and get the mileage program on it and get better gas mileage.
