New Air Box Mod?!

My buddy is has a Tacoma and we were smack talkin about various mods we've done/planning on doing and he told me about a popular air box mod that they do on their trucks. We looked at mine and saw that it would prolly work on Rangers too.

They call it the "Deckplate mod" and you basically cut out a circle and insert a deckplate. They are removable, so you can put it on and off when you want and are water-tight.

Here's the link: Deckplate mod Note that the write-up is from a Taco, but same ideas would apply to Rangers.

Cool. Would be almost un-noticable, too. Is that on the side or the bottom?

Cool, that would be a good mod to do. What exactly is a deck plate used for?

I think it'd allow you to either run a snorkle or jus as much air as possible? That'd be sweet so a truck would breath nice on the road but once u hit the water u shut the hole up.

does the 3.0 airbox have enough room for one of those?
sounds like a good idea, out when you are on the street and when you know your going to go thru the bad stuff close it up.

I do believe that the 4.0 and the 3.0 have the same airbox, but don't quote me on it. The only thing you'll run into is the side of our airboxes have ridge wave things, it's not perfectly flat. It's like this ~~~~ sort of, i dont know how to explain it. You'd just have to fill around the plate with something to keep it water tight.

my brother has a 99 tacoma and he did that... it works great.. he leaves the cap off for normal driving but puts it on in the rain, so it doesnt suck up water.

it cost like 12 dollars...

great mod

I just drilled a ring of 1" holes at the very top of the bottom section of my air box to allow air to come in from all sides when offroading. May let some warm air in, but who cares, lol? I'm not a racer.

What it's for is to make sure that water that slams up against the front of the air box can't cover the only inles. Since I can draw air in from any side around the top, it minimizes the chance of taking in much water. It has to rise all the way to the top of the airbox, and surround it, before air is cut off.

A look at my avatar indicates why I need it, lol. A snorkel is on the bill for the future, but I haven't done it yet. That deckplate is a great idea for a "snorkel bypass" so you get air when not using the snorkel. thanks for the information!
