i was just tosing around the idea with my brother to get a hood scoop for his ranger. should we try a single scoop or go for the two eclipse scoops

heres the single one http://static.summitracing.com/globa...sum-470090.jpg

and heres the double ones http://static.summitracing.com/globa...nd-80002_w.jpg
also is it worth it to make them funtional or not because he doesnt want to cut into his hood if it wont help that much

heres a picture of his truck-its a 98 Xlt reg 4cyl
thanks

Honestly, I think it is pointless to put them on unless they will be functional. There will be power gains if they are functional, but nothing extreme.

r0ng5 10-30-2004 10:18 AM

hm.. i'd say single...

side note: is there anyway to make it functional? anyway to route it so that it'd be like.. an extra intake? Do we have to mess with the MAF too? hm.....

Zero 10-30-2004 10:41 AM

You could cut out the hood I guess just to let fresh air in to cool the motor more, but it wont be going into the intake. I say buy an Edge hood and put the mustang scoop in it. The mustang scoop goes REALLY well with the Edge hood and I think looks killer.

As far as those two you posted, I like the single. I guy at my school has the double on his ranger and it doesnt look real great. The doubles just seem real common around here so I get tired of looking at them.

jtslmn720 10-30-2004 10:47 AM

yea im starting to liek teh single also. its not as long as the doubles either so its not gunna be an eye sore. my brother also found this scoop that goes in the spot between teh windsheild and hood at summit which i really like
http://static.summitracing.com/globa...s-983231_w.jpg

Will putting this in that spot make it funtional without any moding because theres allready those holes in it for cooling i would assume

Skyjacker_44 10-30-2004 10:51 AM

i'm going with the edge hood and MUstang scoop....i agree that <-----looks killer but if i had to pick i'd say single

jtslmn720 10-30-2004 10:55 AM

i would agree but i dont think that he wants to spend that much money on it

PickupMan92 10-30-2004 10:58 AM

Hey 4x4, I don't beleie those holes are for cooling because they aren't even connect by the engine bay to the outside.

The only car I have seen with a functional scoop (other than a turboe'd car) is the Mustang Mach1. It scoops air and channels it onto the airfilter. U may wanna look into this setup, but pease whatever you do, get it molded in and don't just stick it on there. :-D

I was tossing around the idea of putting a mustang hood scoop on my 2000's hood... still am thinking bout it in fact. Here is an idea of what it would look like on this style hood thanks to Bailey for doing the photoshop....

They are for cooling alright...cooling your interior. That's where the outside air for the interior vents comes from.

As for making the hood scoop functional...Ranger Thunderbolts have a functional hood scoop optional. Might want to look for pics of one to get an idea of what they did.

jtslmn720 10-30-2004 01:46 PM

i love the way that thatguys truck looks with the scoop. thats the mustang scoop u say

well not i know what those holes are for

I'm very doubtful that the thunderbolts scoop IS functional. anyone got a pic of the engine bay on one those puppies?

It isn't on all of them. A functional scoop was optional. I'm trying to dig up info, but SLP isn't in charge of the Thunderbolt anymore, so I'm not sure where to look.

A scoop on the cowl vents would most likely DECREASE airflow into the vents; they're placed there by design because the base of the windshield is a low-pressure area created by the way air flows over the hood into the windshield. The air is basically being drawn in straight down, not from the front.

Take a look at any Nascar, they draw thier engine air in at the same location for that same reason; the dront grilles on a nascar are for cooling ONLY.

http://www.e-cookbooks.net/mousepad/nas2.jpg
See the little square opening at the base of the windshield? A Nascar breathes through there.

http://www.mrufer.ch/foto/2002/goodwood/img_1010.jpg
See how the air cleaner is sealed off from the engine compartment and ducted back to that opening? Nascar engineers don't want to worry about the variables of "ram air" on their motors, or the spectre of debris getting sucked in at 190mph, so they design them to breath through the "low pressure" area where there is basically a bubble of comparably static air to breath from.

Actually a bunch of people have the Mustang scoop on the powerdome hood and it looks pretty good.

The only reason I haven't done it yet is because I don't want a scoop until I have enough horsepower to back it up.

jtslmn720 11-03-2004 01:46 PM

PowerRanger4.0 that looks so awsome. have any shots from the direct front and the side u could PM me with. does urs have that little part in the front of it because ive found 2 mustang scoops and the one is 13$ and the other is 85$

Edit: nevermind now that i take a closer look at the scoop ive figured out which one it is.

since when do you need enough horsepower to backup something cosmetic?

GONRACIN 11-03-2004 11:36 PM

here's a pic of mine....it's mainly for letting hot air escape the engine bay...

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member.../502259_27.jpg

just so you know, the truck is now yellow with blue scallop-type accents...
